Flip flops: an open-toed sandal with a Y-shaped strap. Also, a severely misunderstood type of footwear. Walk into the office in flip flops, and you’re a slob. Attend a fashion event in flip flops, and you’re straight up rude. Sashay into a club — no wait, you won’t even be allowed in. Unless you’re a Haiavanas employee, showing your bare toes seems to be a form of #disrespek.
The only places or events this casual footwear is accepted are the beach and/or pool, a BBQ party, a pedicure, and — since you’re in a relatively chill country like Singapore — when you are running errands. People who hate on flip flops don’t appreciate what it means to be free (ha!). I mean, when else can you wiggle your toes and get a good stretch? More places should embrace flip flops, we say!
To celebrate Flip Flop day, here are three examples of how to wear flip flops, and still be fashionable. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t wear these liberating footwear (except at work, because we don’t want to be responsible for your being fired) — else, you can flip them the bird!
A must for bohemian style are prints and colour. These may range from ethnic prints, like those you see on Moroccan fabric, to flora and fauna motifs. Not a big fan of colour? Go for plain flowy, billowy pieces such as palazzo pants, an off-shoulder top, or peasant blouse with puffed sleeves. Celebrities that have pulled this look off are Kendall Jenner, Jessica Alba, and Vanessa Hudgens.
Dress down in these easy and comfortable styles, with a few accessories to complete the look. The trick is to pull off an “effortlessly chic” vibe, and not like you woke up late. Try rompers, casual playsuits, and dresses (both maxi and midi) if you feel like you’ve worn the classic tee-and-jeans combo way too many times. Accessories that will come in handy would be hats, belts, shades, and a sturdy bag. Check out how celebs like Emma Roberts, Amanda Seyfried, as well as fashion bloggers, match their flip flops!
We don’t mean to match your suit with your flip flops, unless it’s a linen beach suit and you have the confidence of Muhammad Ali (may he rest in peace!), but “lazy formal” or “casual formal” is to dress like you would — in whatever you consider to be fashionable and trendy — but to bring it down a notch. In this case, to pair the outfit with flip flops. Marykate and Ashley Olsen, the rule-breaking style icons they are, do this very well. It looks like wearing a structured jacket, leather or otherwise, is an easy way to glam up the outfit. Gigi Hadid and Bar Rafael join the twins for this style formula!
