We are always glad to know that there is good in everyone, especially when it comes to fashion giants who care more than just making beautiful clothes and earning money from shoppers.
Earlier this February, Uniqlo Singapore held a special shopping experience for 30 students with special needs from AWWA School, for the first time, at Uniqlo Suntec City.
This special shopping experience was dedicated to allow students to practise the important life skills they learned in school – such as shopping without parental supervision – in a supportive and safe environment, with the attentive care of the Uniqlo staff. Furthermore, the students were also given a $100 voucher each to spend at the store, and Uniqlo staff assisted each with selecting, fitting, and budgeting.
Ms Pauline Cheng, Head of Session, AWWA School, was extremely pleased with the students’ experience at Uniqlo as the session has been fun and educational experience for the students. “Most importantly, this experience gave them a chance to apply the important life skills taught in class, and empowered them to make personal decisions,” she said.
AWWA School has an enrolment of over 260 pupils with intellectual disabilities, development delayed and autism spectrum disorder. It offers education through a structured curriculum and enrichment activities geared towards maximising their potential for independence and improving their quality of life.

Keds and Kate Spade have put their creative juices together to come up with this vibrant shoe collection that is set to make their fans drool – and no doubt gain new ones too. The all-new range is playful and modern, capturing femininity and colourful aesthetics that both brands are known for. Ked’s President Rick Blackshaw called it a marriage made in style heaven, and we couldn’t agree more.
“Kate Spade New York has always been a leader in creating sophisticated style with a whimsical twist. Deborah Lloyd understands better than anyone how to design for women who want to have fun with fashion, and appreciates how a good sneaker can help create the perfect outfit,” he said.
Featuring a masterful mix of materials and polished designs, the iconic Keds® Champion and new Rally silhouettes are crafted in fishnet mesh, natural cork, and perforated nubuck and nappa leathers, creating an ideal canvas for signature kate spade new york details like crashes of color, cap toes, pointer toes, rubber jute soles, and whimsical prints. The color palette is an eclectic mix of lipstick pink, metallic silver, bud green, aqua, sand, white and black.
The Keds for kate spade new york collection will be available in April 2014 at selected Royal Sporting House stores, BHG (Bugis), DOT, Robinsons Orchard, Rockstar and TANGS. Retailing at SGD $99.00.

Art takes many forms and through many mediums. Laughter captured on a simple voice recorder, a realistic portrait of a street musician, and most immediate and accessible of all – eternalising a moment with photography.
Aik Beng Chia is local photographer known for his poignantly realistic style of local street photography. His medium is not a heavy DSLR, but a humble mobile smartphone. This time, to further capture the notion of immediacy, Aik Beng Chia presents his collection of photos taken with a fun-loving Fujifilm Instax Mini in his third solo exhibition.
The instant camera and its films are a first for him – adding another degree of depth to his signature style of capturing local subjects from an undivided angle. The solo exhibiton, happening 27 February to 27 March 2014 at Peek!, will gloss over an estimated 200 instant images – all taken over the span of one year.
The exhibition also comes with the launch of his photo book, titled Here|Now, opening another dimension to the range of analog cameras and films that we have all come to love and enjoy. Printed only in limited numbers, each book is unique. A custom instax photo as the front cover to commemorate the launching of the exhibition and the book serves as a distinctive feature.
With his images, Aik Beng Chia will present a keen artistic edge to the instax film, playing with its minimal function, but at the same time producing images that are thought provoking and tangible all at once – captured with utmost immediacy without a single hesitation.
Here|Now is happening from 27 February 2014, Thursday till 27 March 2014, Thursday. The exhibition is open 12.00pm – 8.00pm (Tuesdays to Saturdays) and 12.00pm to 7.00pm (Sundays) at Peek! 36 Armenian Street #02-04.

We all love birthdays. A year older, a year wiser. Plus, there are always good goodie bags or gifts popping up during this special occasion. ZALORA’s 2nd birthday is around the corner, and they’re celebrating it by having ZALORA’s Birthday Pop-Up Weekend, which is also their very first pop-up event.
It will feature and sell apparel and accessories from the latest collections of ZALORA’s bestseller brands including UK high-street label River Island, and ZALORA’s in-house designer label EZRA.
Location is key for birthday bashes, and ZALORA picked a gem for its Pop-Up Weekend. A beautiful boutique at the very hip Tiong Bahru estate (61 Seng Poh Lane) will house the apparels from this Friday, 27th February until this Sunday, 2nd March.
Treats like cupcakes from Swirls Bake Shop and a luxurious selection of Chilean wines are waiting to be devoured and sipped by shoppers. Sounds great doesn’t it? We agree with the ZALORA team – it does sound like a sort of ‘Shopaholics High-Tea’!

LACOSTE L!IVE’s S/S 2014 is full of colour and prints, with something for everyone with an illustrative style. The collection tells us stories through snapshots of a Japanese road trip, the explosive culture of Brooklyn’s hip-hop scene, an adventure starting from the market to the swimming pool, and a fashionable day at the tennis court – amongst many others.
Prints are a reflection of these mental snapshots, and colours are inspired by the vibrancy of every city and place. For the men, expect parkas inspired by the luxuriant nature and mud, comfortable sweatpants, orange chinos and basketball jerseys. Match these with a duffle bag over the shoulder. The pale greens, yellows and blues of the range are easy to match and wonderful on its own.
For the ladies, coral mini-skirts and oversized polo tees with zebra-striped Crocodelle are perfect for the fresh and sporty look. Unless you prefer cropped sleeveless polos and striped open back dresses, which LACOSTE has designed for simple dressers as well as edgy ones.
The LACOSTE L!VE Spring Summer 2014 Collection will be available from February
onwards at the following Lacoste Boutiques: Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, 8 Grange Road, #01-01/01A, ION Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn, #B3-60, and Playlab @ TANGS Orchard.

For every era and/or music genre, there will be a defining act – the zeitgeist that encapsulates the stardom, prestige, and calibre of each music category. Madonna and Britney Spears as the Queen and Princess of Pop, and Michael Jackson, the patriach of the same genre. Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin as the King and Queen of Rock and Roll in two different eras. These are just some of the names whose work will forever influence popular culture.
Hip hop is no different, and Wu-Tang Clan have earned honorific titles befitting their status. Legends and “unique entities to hip hop history” are just some of these power nicknames and there is no doubt that the rap group has revolutionised the hip hop scene.
Whatever you choose to call them, Wu-Tang Clan are veterans, making them the perfect start for Red Bull Music Academy’s Solid Gold event series. On March 13th 2014, Red Bull Music Academy will be bringing in two thirds of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, namely Raekwon and Ghostface Killah.
Originating from New York City, the two rappers played a key role in defining the distinctive East Coast rap sound and influencing the rap genre globally over the past 2 decades. After the release of “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 chambers)” in 1993, the Clan’s highly influential debut album, Rae and Ghostface followed up with their groundbreaking solo albums “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” (1995) and “Ironman” (1996).
The promoter of the event Felix Huang (Recognize Studio) and Wayne Liu (KoFlow) see a huge potential in bringing high caliber Hip Hop acts to Singapore, and wants to offer solid gold music to its audiences. Offering sounds from the golden era of hip hop will definitely do that! The presence of supporting acts Kevin Lester, Shigga Shay and the Radikal Forze makes it the event to watch out for this 2014.
In conjunction with the current application phase for Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo in October this year (applications close March, 18), Wu-Tang founding member Raekwon will also be guest speaker during a Red Bull Music Academy session in Zouk’s Winebar before he and Ghostface storm the club’s main stage “tiger style”.
A select group of Singaporean MCs, DJs, music makers & lovers of all genres are invited to an intimate lecture with Raekwon, who is about to open his precious treasure chest of 20 years in the music business – personal exchange and advise from the notorious East Coast rapper that is invaluable for every aspiring musician.
Red Bull Music Academy presents Solid Gold: Raekwon & Ghostface Killah will stage at Zouk, Singapore on March 13th 2014. Tickets will retail for $70 on https://ticketing.zoukclub.com ($80 at the door). The show is brought in by Agent One & Recognize Studios together with Red Bull – Product of Europe.

Ever imagined enjoying a pint of delectable craft beer while piggy out on your favourite hawker dishes? Smith Street Taps, the first hawker stall in Singapore to offer premium and craft beer on tap, has since torn apart all barriers to make this possible.
Located at Chinatown Complex, Smith Street Taps is the brainchild of Daniel Goh of The Good Beer Company and Meng Chao of Brewers’ Craft that aims to make craft beer accessible to the masses with its wide range of affordable draught beers.
“Daniel and I have the same vision for growing the craft beer community in Singapore, so it’s only natural that we have decided to collaborate,” said Meng Chao.
“We want people to be able to appreciate awesome craft beers from all over the world without burning a hole in the pocket, and that’s one of the main reasons why Smith Street Taps was born.”
It’s not like we don’t already know, beer is notorious for being a universal instigator of bonding moments. Adding craft and variety to the equation only makes Smith Street Taps a gem for beer lovers who enjoy a casual local setting.
At any one time, the all-taps beer paradise serves up to eight draught beers, which are offered on a rotational basis. New beers – some not available anywhere else – will be introduced store every few weeks, allowing customers to experience a wide range of fresh beers from both international and local breweries not easily found in other parts of Singapore.
Some of its special hard-to-find beers include the highly-rated Deschutes Black Butte Porter, a rich chocolatey beer from Oregon, as well as Adnams Ghost Ship, a golden ale from England. Customers can also expect to see beers including MOA from Marlborough, New Zealand and Nøgne Ø from Grimstad, Norway as part of its 2014 roster. Fans of Japanese beers will also be pleased to find that Sapporo beer is a permanent feature at the stall.
In order to guarantee an ideal drinking experience for the discerning beer drinker, the staff at Smith Street Taps have undergone training such as maintaining the right temperatures for the different beer types and served in the correct glasses to ensure that the beer is served in optimal conditions. Customers are also encouraged to pair hawker dishes popular in Chinatown Complex with their beer, with advice from staff.
“By setting up Smith Street Taps, we want to reach out to the growing market of people who are appreciating craft beer. We also want to help to keep Singapore’s hawker tradition alive by attracting a wider audience to visit our hawker centres and supporting our hawkers,” Daniel explained.
“We believe that this can change the perception of hawkers and hawker centres, and hopefully attract young aspirational F&B entrepreneurs to cut their teeth by starting their business from a hawker stall.”

Ever found yourself stuck in the occurrence of a road rage or found yourself obsessing over social media so much that it is taking over your life? The Necessary Stage presents Poor Thing, a production that grapples with the issue of road rage and also taps into the obsession of living lives through the social media in this digital age.
A fun, innovative and true-to-life play, Poor Thing explores the ugly side of citizen journalism and bad behaviour of Singaporeans into focus.

A production not to be missed, Poor Thing is directed by Alvin Tan and written by Haresh Sharma and features Siti Khalijah Zainal, Sharda Harrison, Joshua Lim and Dwayne Lau.

“Opposites attract” is a phrase that everyone is familiar with, especially when it comes to love. However this spring, Staple celebrates opposites by bringing traditional and modern together in its Spring 2014 collection.
Think of sportswear meeting mesh nylons, patterns like paisleys and toile, and yarn-dyed jerseys, all put together for a reinterpretation on vintage patterns into sports silhouettes, making the collection stylish and easy-to-wear.
Staple’s Spring collection also ushers in new collaborations with Dave White, a contemporary British Artist, and Jack Stocker, a young talent from Brighton UK who’s been recognised for his minimal, iconic sneaker illustrations.
This collection features White’s take on the pigeon and his stylized brush strokes. This collaboration also takes iconic sneakers like the Jordan 1s, the Air Max 90s and the Staple x Nike Dunks and puts them onto graphic tees that are as simple and minimal as Stocker’s aesthetic.
In addition, the second delivery of the collection will include a polarized, laser-etched Knockaround Sunglasses collaboration that features the signature Staple colorway of grey and pink.
Staple Spring Collection is now available at Reed Space Singapore, 100 Beach Road Shaw Tower #01-50.

The Simpsons premiered in 1989. Yes, that was 25 years ago (!!!) and yet, we’re as crazy about them as ever. So crazy, that brands are declaring their love for the animated series on apparels and footwear.
LA brand Joyrich is one of them. To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Simpsons, Joyrich teamed up with Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation to combine street style and classic animation. This means another colourful and playful collaboration that reflects their casual-rich street aesthetics. Look forward to a mash up of Bart Simpson graphics and 90’s hip hop style!
Joyrich is not all about street apparel though. Another range from their S/S collection takes a leaf out of chic Parisians and the city’s culture. It is a mixture of high-end, Parisian style with American 80’s and 90’s silhouettes, featuring bold, pop-inspired prints with various infused elements, fabric, and eras. From floral and cherub printed mesh, to sports inspired high-end athletic wear, the “casual-rich” inspired collection is sure to have something for everyone.
Another brand known for its printed apparel is HUF, a brand made by skateboarders and for skateboarders. The brand revolves around the skateboard mentality and the vast array of countercultures that parallel it. Taking on the classic American craftsmanship, their Spring 2014 range integrates material and construction inspired by those specific garments that have endured the test of time, resulting in a product sufficiently suited to handle the abuses sustained by skateboarding.
Accompanied by casual graphics and slogans, HUF offers a unique range that reflects sophistication while simultaneously incorporating that certain nonchalance so commonly associated with skateboarders and artists alike.
Both Joyrich collections have been launched and are currently available at Actually, [email protected] #04-06 while the HUF Spring 14 collection will be launched sometime next week.

Avey Tare, member of experimental psychedelic band Animal Collective, is presenting his debut album by Slasher Flicks. The album, called Enter the Slasher House, is ready to be released on April 7th 2014. No, this is not a Halloween soundtrack – it’s too early for that anyway!
According to Domino Records, it’s a reflection of the musicians “reinventing sounds they’re already skilled in making, sounds that as Avey Tare says, are not only regionally unrestricted but that ‘come from a place that’s not human’.”
The band, made up of singer Avey Tare, keyboard player and singer Angel Deradoorian (of Dirty Projectors, Deradoorian), and drummer Jeremy Hyman (of Ponytail, Dan Deacon) composed the the eight songs on acoustic guitar.
Uniquely its own “jazz power trio,”Slasher Flicks produced and recorded the songs live at the Lair studio using only minimal overdubs; the live sound being key to Slasher Flicks’ spooky dynamism.
Songs you can look forward to are:
1. A Sender
2. Duplex Trip
3. Blind Babe
4. Little Fang
5. Catchy (Was Contagious)
6. That It Won’t Grow
7. The Outlaw
8. Roses On The Window
9. Modern Days E
10. Strange Colores
11. Your Card
While their sound is monstrous and there are nightmarish moments peppering the lyrics and melodies, Little Fang’s clean guitars, soft everything and special smoke called “PYT” blown into the tape machine shows off spirits conjured from sweeter worlds.

Jack’s Hit returns to Loof with a special bass edition on February 22! This bass edition features three DJs with their distinctive bass-heavy style coming together to give you the bass (best) night ever.
Headlining the night is Darren Dubwise. A veteran DJ in his own right, the D has played everywhere from major club nights at Tanjong Beach Club to Zouk and festivals, such as the Good Vibrations Festival and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival here in Singapore.

Completing the line-up is Jaydah from all-girl collective Attagirl! and homegrown label Phyla. A graduate from the 2012 FFF Girl DJ Bootcamp, Jaydah’s bass style is more towards the deeper and immersive spectrum to feed your heart and soul.

Front Row is proud to highlight Spring/Summer collections from new and existing brands. Each brand has been specially curated globally with an eclectic mix of different styles.
A brand that aims to highlight the fundamental importance of clothes making, Biro clothes are made entirely in Japan and traditional kimono dyeing methods were used to give fabrics the richness of the natural indigo dye.
In its debut collection, basics made with exquisite material and elaborate manufacturing techniques bring about a look that is clean, simple and pure. Precise technical handling such as using vintage TSURI-AMI machinery gives a softer and more responsive fabric similar to hand knitted. Main colours in this collection include black, white and blue.
Since his beginnings in 1991, Christophe Lemaire has been through a long fashion road, from being appointed artistic director of Lacoste’s ready-to-wear in 2000, to being the artistic director of fashion giant Hermès women ready-to-wear in 2010.
His latest collection for women is chic and tasteful, playing with neutral range of beige and white. Convertible volumes and Maoist blousons, an alphabet of pockets Asymmetrical capes of urban heroines are seen.
In Spring/ Summer 2014 Men Collection, Christophe Lemaire presents an essential and bright wardrobe for every day life. Featuring silhouettes that are light, sharp and generous volumes with numerous pockets. Colour tones in this collection gear towards black shades, cinnamon and vintage postal-cards colours.
Cy Choi’s 2014 SS Collection brings about Deconstruction, where wool canvas is used inside of men’s classic jacket. Its rough and stiff texture is applied to the lapels or the waistbands, which are on the surface of the garments. The facing on the surface of the garments and out-pockets/ out-zippers with the protective film is also deconstructive.
White, black, dark grey and melange grey, which are signature colors of Cy Choi are used in this collection.
KANG. D, a Parsons Design School graduate, is the brainchild behind D. GNAK and has carefully crafted the image of the brand bringing innovation and style together.
Specialising in tailored men’s clothing with twisted details, avant-garde silhouette and achromatic colours, the brand’s collection for this season takes inspiration from “Men in Black” where the philosophy is the contrast between projected and personal self – how the seemingly unsuspecting can turn out the complete opposite.
Odd lengths, drapes and sharp asymmetric layers in a strictly monochromatic theme are seen in this collection.
Established in 2012, Etudes represents the experiences of the founders, Aurelien Arbet and Jeremie Egry, and spontaneity is central to their every collection.
In this SS 2014 collection, bold and psychedelic hues with highly contrasted theme take the stage. The Internet and globalisation is an apparent subject of their design. Wide, loose cuts also dominate this collection in the wide selection of tops and jackets as well as the famous Etudes Hat.
Being the first Korean to present at New York Fashion Week, Bumsuk Choi’s General Idea is one of Korea’s best.
The SS 2014 collection is one where high-end streetwear meets futuristic sport chic. Fabric mesh, metallic, reptile, leather, bold lines are dominant throughout but the focal point is definitely the outerwear; from the hoodie to the bomber jacket that is re-imagined in all sorts of colourways and combinations.
Front Row is available at Raffles Hotel Arcade #02-09, 328 North Bridge Road.
