Local premium sneaker label Leftfoot has recently been stocking up pennies from heaven. Or in other words, the classic Weejuns from G.H. Bass.
A little background about the huge fuss on these timeless classics… In 1936, G.H. Bass & Co. discovered a shoe in Norway that inspired one of the most readily recognizable icons of classic American style — Weejuns loafers. The style was an instant hit. In the 40’s and 50’s, people began slipping dimes (the cost of a payphone call) into the slits on top of their Weejuns.
In the 60’s, hip young things began using pennies as a matter of fashion and this led to its name ‘penny loafer’. Weejuns saw another surge of popularity in the ‘80’s when the preppy look was the rage in the U.S. and Michael Jackson took the style international, sporting penny loafers in his 1983 Thriller video and moon-walking for the first time to Billie Jean that same year to celebrate Motown’s 25th anniversary.
Today, the resurgence and appreciation for heritage brands is once again shining the spotlight on the classic Weejuns, inspiring a whole new generation of fans interpreting the style in their own unique way.
A range of G.H. Bass shoes for men is available now at Leftfoot from SGD149 onwards. Popular styles from G.H. Bass women’s collection like the Matilda and Maebird will be available at a later date.
