We all look up to strong and independent women. But, what does it take to be one? There is a rise in the number of female entrepreneurs this age and they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. More focus has been placed on hearing what women have to offer and the value in them.
Genecia Alluora is one such example. She is the founder of Soul Rich Woman (SRW) and a former Miss Singapore. To earn her keep she started working as young as the age of 14 as a Yoga and Aerobics instructor, her big break came when she entered the Miss Singapore Competition in her early twenties. It was also during that period that she started exploring business opportunities and image consulting, and founded InQueenz, a leading C-level image consultant agency. She tried her hand at building a team and running a business for the first time which got her started in entrepreneurship. It definitely hasn’t been an easy journey, having gotten into debts and failing on her first try.
“It was so difficult because I had to learn everything on my own. I didn’t have any mentors or anyone to help me. That was how the idea of Soul Rich Woman came about,” she recounted.
Despite her hardship, the people she met along the way made her entrepreneurial journey worthwhile. Her travels have allowed her to meet women from all over the world – even Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg and best-selling author, Mary Buffett.
“Their stories are incredible. Some have come through really tough times, others became entrepreneurs out of necessity but they are all so strong, so motivated and they have really inspired me to continue my journey,” the SRW Founder shared.
Having many entrepreneurship experiences under her belt and running eight businesses at the moment, an important attribute she has learnt is to think beyond her own interests and to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Her decision to help others has not only increased her reach but has provided other budding female entrepreneurs with a community to support them every step of the way.
It was a mission for Genecia to help women succeed by tackling the lack of female entrepreneurship and life coaches. Having learnt the hard way, she wanted to set up a network for women to learn and share their experiences and knowledge. That was how Soul Rich Woman came about. They started with a few thousand followers to a strong network of 10,000 members all around South-East Asia! Moving forward, SRW is looking to expand across South-East Asia. With amazing mentors including COO of 9GAG, co-founder of Scalized and founder of SauceINK, SRW wants to help women who are afraid of taking the leap to entrepreneurship.
“Find a mentor,” the one thing that Genecia reiterated throughout the interview. “Don’t be afraid to reach out to business people you admire because you’ll learn so much from them, especially during challenging periods.”
The other advice for females in their 20s looking to start a business is to Invest in yourself, be it in education, public speaking or accounting. Whatever it may be, always invest in yourself. It closes the skill gaps that can help so many people in their entrepreneurial journey.
To Genecia, success is not about the glorious wins or accolades, but the hard work and perseverance which goes on behind the scenes.
SRW is a community of women for women empowering its members to succeed in life, business and health through knowledge sharing, networking and inspiring confidence
