Underscore is an independent magazine with thematic content attuned to a simple rhythm; quality of life. It features a wide range of content about arts, culture, fashion, design and worldwide creative industries. With a pool of international contributors, Underscore seeks to underline the simple and important values that are neglected in our everyday life. Recently, it has been awarded the Presidentʼs Design Award in the category of Design of the Year 2011 after the launch of its latest edition – UNDERSCORE N°3: THE FIGHT ISSUE.
The Presidentʼs Design Award represents the pinnacle of recognition in Singaporeʼs design sector. Jurors of the awards cited Underscore as being unlike your run-of-the-mill magazine, but a labour of love. Recognized for being a well-balanced magazine with good design, thought-provoking articles and outstanding content, they chose the recipient, describing it as “a magazine you want to read. It is emotional, it has depth, it has a heart. You want to feel it, open it and devour it – voraciously.”
Launched as a magazine of its own kind in October 2009, this biannual publication was conceptualized and produced by award winning studio Hjgher to encourage values of honesty, quality, authenticity and integrity. “We love print and we couldn’t find a magazine that resonated with our beliefs. So, we did it ourselves”, says Mr Justin Long, Hjgherʼs creative director.
The Underscore magazine goes beyond print to spread its belief as well. In its latest edition, the magazine took the opportunity to launch THE U STORE. Established in support of independent craft folk who dedicate themselves to creating timeless pieces of exquisite quality, Underscore seeks to collaborate creatively with purveyors of the aforementioned to create simple and honest items of handmade distinction.
It is with shared beliefs in traditional processes, integrity of materials used and sensitivity in design details that products of THE U STORE are made. All items are available at select stores worldwide and online at www.underscoremagazine.com.
