It’s fresh, it’s punchy and it’s “one big bowl of happiness” – there’s a Spanish buzz happening on Market Street, celebrating one of Singapore’s most favourite past times with its own Spanish flavours of alegria comida (or the “joy of eating”). The opening of Mercado Spanish Food Market refreshes the heart of the CBD, livening up weekday mornings and lunch times with its offering of hearty fare designed to nourish, boost and satisfy.
The sight of Mercado, which is the Spanish word for “market”, from both outside and in is a visual feast – just like the traditional markets in Spain – full of the vibrant colours of daily fresh and cooked ingredients presented at the counter, all tinged with the typical Spanish flavours of smoky paprika, hot chilli peppers, saffron, garlic and other assorted herbs and spices.
The formula is simple: eat to be happy… alegria comida! Diners can choose from the delicious array at the counter to create your own customised bowl of happiness, priced at only SGD16.50. For those on the go, simply take any of the ready-made Hola bowls, freshly concocted daily, priced at SGD14.50. To complement, Mercado also serves up super fresh, cold-pressed fruit juice. As a sure quick-fire lunch, CBD dwellers will not have to wait long and waste minutes to enjoy their precious lunch hour.
At the helm of Mercado, is Chef-Owner Jean-Philippe Patruno (affectionately known as JP), who made waves in Singapore’s thriving food scene with the opening of Dehesa last December 2015, with its bold and brazen repertoire of gutsy dishes earning him the moniker of nose-to-tail king. This year with his newest venture of sister outlet Mercado, he takes on Market Street to deliver a bright, vibrant menu of wholesome fare and vivacious Spanish flavours, allowing diners to choose what they want as they build their own bowl of happiness.
Ending each week with a punch is Sangria Fridays, available every Friday only from 12.30pm to closing, and here’s the sweetener – it’s only SGD8 per glass or SGD36 per jug! Chef JP’s own concoction of Sangria Punch will be made fresh and chilled perfectly for the end-of-work refresher and to kick off the weekend. A Spanish house red wine will also be served at SGD8 per glass and SGD44 per bottle. Diners can also indulge an icy-cold, crisp and refreshing Catalan beer from Barcelona, Moritz at SGD10 per bottle.
