A competition usually ends with a final winner, the tired but ecstatic champion that will go on to do even greater things. This year, the Archifest 2014 Pavillion Design Competition, which lets local architects battle it out for a chance to design the Archifest Pavillion, has announced the emergence of not one but two champions!
Returning in its 8th year come this September, Archifest 2014 explores the theme ‘crowd’, and how the notion of crowd operates and contributes to architecture and urbanism. The two architects who have won over the judges (which includes members from Design Singapore Institution and Singapore’s Institute of Architects) with their interpretations and designs of ‘crowd’ are Fong Hoo Cheong of HCF and Associates, and Kelvin Kan and Lead Designer Shinya Okuda of AgFacadesign and NUS.
SIA’s President and Pavilion Jury member, Theodore Chan commented, “This unprecedented outcome is due to the highest quality of the winning submissions and the intensity of the design competition recording the highest number of top quality submissions in the history of Archifest. Both design proposals have shown great flexibility in accommodating various people and the different activities, as well as, showcased the architectural idea of people and their ability to empower change within the city. We are excited to see how collaboration between the two winners will culminate towards the Archifest 2014 pavilion.”
Well, we are looking forward to that collaboration too! HCF and Associates and AgFacadesign and NUS were awarded this year for their design concept entries titled, ‘FUGUE 1357’ and ‘CLOUD ARCH’ respectively. As winners, both firms will be given a budget of SGD50,000 to build the Pavilion which will span across up to 623 sqm.
Archifest 2014 will be held from 26 September to 11 October 2014. The two-week long festival will be anchored at the Archifest Pavilion, situated at the Marina Bay Event Plaza with a pop-up café. The festival will also feature Urban Lab, Archifest Conference, Architours and other fringe events.
