Petai (translation: bitter/stink beans) is infamous for its bitter taste and its long-lasting overpowering odour. It’s very popular in Malaysia. You can eat it as it is with sambal belacan or cook it in spicy sambal and prawns.
While it is widely known as a savoury dish, you can now have it as a sweet treat! How, you may ask? FROZEN by Ken has whipped up petai flavoured ice cream! With a speciality in artisanal flavours, the local ice cream brand has flavours such as kaya toast and eis batu campur in their repertoire.
But the petai ice cream is by far the wackiest Malaysian-infused flavour that has ever been made! It is created by infusing fresh petai with vanilla ice cream. We have tried it and it’s definitely an acquired taste. Try it out for yourself! Get it at FROZEN by Ken in Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya, Jalan Telawi Bangsar or SS2 Petaling Jaya for RM10.90 per scoop. If you don’t see it displayed, be sure to ask them for it!

Fans of Mos Burger fans will now be able to get their hands on two delicious and unique burger builds made with the award-winning Impossible Burger, as the Japanese hamburger chain relaunches the famous plant-based meat at all 39 Mos Burger and Mos Cafe outlets in Singapore. The Classic Impossible Burger returns to the main menu, along with the brand-new Pumpkin Mushroom Impossible Burger, priced at just SGD8.35 and SGD9.20 respectively. These delicious burgers offer consumers the opportunity to make planet-friendly food choices at pocket-friendly prices.
The Classic Impossible Burger features a meaty Impossible plant-based patty, sliced cheese, fried onions and a BBQ glaze, while the brand-new Pumpkin Mushroom Impossible Burger features an Impossible plant-based patty, sliced cheese, seared sweet pumpkin slices and a creamy mushroom sauce, both sandwiched between two fluffy buns. Customers can make it a meal with MOS’s side treats like classic french fries, croquettes or green salad; soup treats including corn, clam chowder or mushroom; and desserts including Hokkaido milk ice cream, spirul ice soft serve and a selection of soda drinks and the much-loved Iced Milk tea.
Following the nationwide launch of Impossible Foods’ award-winning plant-based meat in March 2019, the demand has steadily increased among Singapore’s top chefs, restaurant-goers and Singapore’s best-loved fast food restaurants. The Silicon Valley-based company’s flagship product, the Impossible Burger, is now available in a variety of cuisines in nearly 300 restaurants across the island. Click here to find a restaurant close to you.
While tucking into MOS Burger’s creative burgers, and other Impossible dishes from partner restaurants across the Little Red Dot, consumers can appreciate the low carbon footprint of a plant-based diet. Because it’s made from plants, the Impossible Burger (113g serving size) uses 96% less land, 87% less water and 89% less greenhouse gasses compared to ground beef from a cow. This means a saving of 7 square meters of land, 3 kg of CO2, and 84 litres of water for each Impossible burger consumed. The Impossible Burger rivals ground beef from cows for taste, nutrition and versatility and contains no animal hormones or antibiotics.
MOS Burger is a Japanese hamburger chain restaurant offering a wide variety of unique burgers. One of their most famous creations is the Rice Burger, launched in 1987 as the first in Japan, the burger replaces traditional buns with circular grilled rice cakes flavoured with Japanese seasonings. Every MOS burger is prepared fresh to ensure customers enjoy the flavour of the burger to the fullest.
The Classic Impossible Burger and the Pumpkin Mushroom Impossible Burger will be available for dine-in and take away from all 39 MOS Burger and MOS cafe outlets in Singapore; and to order via Deliveroo, Foodpanda and GrabFood starting 24 June.

Calling all burger enthusiasts! The popular American burger joint is finally landing on Malaysian soil. You must have seen your kaki travel friends posing with foil-wrapped burgers claiming this is the best burger ever! Well, they are not wrong. It’s delicious!
Malaysia’s first Five Guys outlet will be opening in Genting Highlands. While it is pretty far away from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, trust us when we say it will be worth the drive. So, what is so special about Five Guys? It gives you fast-food burgers with gourmet quality. You can customise your order with free toppings! Yes, free.
Think unlimited mushrooms, grilled onions, green peppers and more, topped with sauces of your choice. Another fan favourite, almost as popular as their burgers, are the Cajun fries. Move over McDonald’s and Burger King, there is a new fries king in town! The hand-cut fries are cooked in 100% pure peanut oil.
They also offer diner-style milkshakes and the best Coca-Cola dispenser ever. It’s unlike anything you have seen before (unless you have been to a Five Guys outlet). It is obvious we are excited for its opening, are you?

All hail the King of the Fruits! The durian season (or szn if you’re an internet linguist) is upon us. But just how well do you know the thorny fruit? Don’t worry, we have got you covered. Here are 10 most popular types of durian available in Malaysia and Singapore.
Musang King is the most sought-after type of durian. With its mesmerising bright yellow hue and buttery delicious texture, it’s no wonder it reigns the kingdom. The fruit has an oval shape and light green in colour. Fun fact: Musang(translates fox) does not mean the animal, but the origin of the variant in Gua Musang, Kelantan.
Another fan favourite, the D24 is also known as Sultan Durian. Similarly, its fruit is oval with a light green colour, but it has a thicker skin. The yellow flesh is a perfect blend of bittersweet, buttery and nutty taste that will leave you wanting more!
The Golden Phoenix is better known by its mandarin name Jin Feng. Its thorns are thin and spiky, resembling the phoenix and hence, the name. The flesh is pale yellow with a complex texture. It is dry, thick and has a mild bitter alcoholic taste. Even the smell is significantly stronger than others.
While most durian flesh is of different shades of yellow, the D13 has a brown orange distinct colour. Known as the ‘kampung breed’, it is a fan favourite due to its sweet taste and milder scent.
The D101 variant is also known for its sweet flavour. However, its creamier than the D13. Some may say it tastes like a ‘creamy thick’ custard. It’s also much cheaper than the Musang King.
If it is your first time trying out the king of fruits, you may want to start with the D1. The pale-yellow flesh tastes milky and sweet, not too strong and just right. It has a light crunch once you reach its small seed but slips off smoothly.
This durian has a reputation for being petite with its small pearl-like seeds and exterior. The greyish colour of the flesh also contributed to the name. The Black Pearl may be milky, but it has a more bitter taste than the rest.
The Red Prawn durian is often bigger than most and has an almost reddish dark shade to its flesh. The taste is sweet, but it has a sticky texture. Don’t forget your wet wipes for this!
This variant is not for first timers. With its bitter and floral complex flavour to its pale-yellow, irregularly shaped flesh, it is also known as the ‘Musang Queen’. Among the high-level durian lovers, this rare type is a top choice.
The Green Bamboo is named as such due to the flesh’s greenish tinge – just like bamboo! The flesh is sweet but fibrous which makes it perfect for digestion. The only downside with Green Bamboo is that the shell is harder than other types which may be hard to crack.
Now that you know of the different types of durian, try them all and find your favourite!
