The Establishment Group is proud to present their calendar of events this May. There will be two Bar Shifts at Manor Cocktail Room with Head bartender Din Hassan who has pulled invitations out of the air, while refining a Sichuan-inspired syrup, with a roster of amazing barkeeps.
Furthermore, they’re going to have three homegrown bartenders, Caryn Cheah, Steve Leong and Alvin Au, on 7 May at the Bar Shift Cocktail room. Other than the bartenders, the month also brings two guest DJs to the Gem Bar. Darker Than Wax’s famed Beats N Beyond night will host UK bass sensation Scratcha DVA on 2 May. On 22 May, the bass goes tropical with BBC Radio 1 with featured American dancehall stalwart Deejay Theory.

Day 1 of Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) 2014 saw Deadmau5 and friends gather for an epic kick-off party. Even though the build-up of the crowd was gradual and the descent of the haze was merciless, nothing could stop the esteemed DJs from raining down euphoric fist-pumping mixes.
As opening acts, Eva T and Bate played crucial roles in setting the vibes right for the evening. Engaging the audience with tempestuous mixes, the DJs raised the climax of the tunes and dropped the beats recurrently to the exhilaration of the party animals.
Adventure Club, Will Sparks and R3hab kept the energy high as the crowd amassed, paving the way for the leading man – Deadmau5. Explicitly expressing his love for cats during his set, Deadmau5 proceeded to announce a “fuck you” to all canine-lovers. (To which, I retorted the same greeting with much defiance and passion – the same way I would fiercely protect my three canine companions.)
Juvenile-cussing aside, we managed to squeeze in a quick chat with R3hab. A DJ who shows his passion for his craft through the mere glimmer in his eye, R3hab takes pride in bringing a unique element of himself into his records and productions. What sets him apart is his presence on stage and his connection with the crowd. We heard an upcoming mix of a Rita Ora track is the works and we’re keeping our ears eagerly peeled for that.
It’s only day 1 of the safari-themed music festival and party animals dressed up to the theme have us reminded that it’s only getting wilder.

As Gem Bar marches into March (ha, pun intended!), here are the highlights of the events that Nookmag thinks you should be looking forward to.
For the first time ever, Gem Bar is proud to be hosting The Comedy Club March Madness Show on 15th March, 8.30 pm, featuring three highly entertaining comics from across the continent.
Colum McDonnell is one of the best-kept secrets in Irish Comedy. Over the past decade Colum has established himself as a regular on the Irish and UK comedy circuits, with his unusual and often self-depreciating outlook on family, life, love and the pain of being the last living hobbit in Ireland.
Best known from his years on Rove Live and hosting Saturday nights on Triple J, Dave Callan from Australia is a versatile and highly entertaining comedian, writer and
Joining The Comedy Club is also Daniel Kinno who delivers insightful and raucous narratives and can be recognised from television where his stand up has been featured on NBC, MTV, The Game Show Network and The WB.
On 29th March, 5 pm at 醉红楼 (Zui Hong Lou), Kult is presenting a group exhibition entitled Chinatown Vinyl Squad. If you’re a fan of vinyls and the vintage, this exhibition is just for you. With the intention of bringing vintage Chinese vinyl record covers back to the public realm with a modern twist, 25 local and international artists were each given a vintage 12” vinyl record cover from the 70s and 80s to showcase their artistic side by drawing, painting, silkscreening and collaging directly onto the album covers.
Covers of the vinyl traced back to the local music scenes in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. With a tinge of nostalgia in every vinyl, the covers selected and remixed include the likes of soundtracks from “The Book and the Sword” and “The Singing Killer” as well as singles from singers like Ming Zhu Sisters, Bao Na Na and Bai Bing.
The show features local artists such as Eric Foenander, SBTG, Laqeesh and Reptiliaphobia as well as international artists Russell Taysom from the UK, Deladeso from LA and Ryan Ady Putra from Indonesia.

Juicy Couture knows how to have fun – evident from their signature glamorous prints and vibrant colours obviously. Pair it with the ever growing yoga movement in Singapore, and you’ll get a double (and healthy) dose of a dynamic time.
The Los Angeles brand kicked off its Spring 2014 Collection, Go West, and the launch of their new line of active-wear, Juicy Couture Sports, with Stretch City. Stretch City is a yoga lifestyle website listing studios, shops, restaurants, events, and promotions related to wellness and eco-living in Singapore. It is the baby of two proud mamas – actress/model Liv Lo and fulltime yoga instructor Yun Ng.
The collaboration offered guests a complimentary Dance Yoga session curated by Yun, Liv, and fellow yogi/DJ Amanda Ling. Amanda’s upbeat electronic music gelled well with the fast-paced yoga movements – the session was Singapore’s first ever Dance Yoga gathering. The 45-minute session saw participants following through various yoga moves accompanied by Liv who was clad in a leopard-print sports bra with yoga pants from the Juicy Couture Sports collection.
“It was as much an introduction as it was interesting for visitors to see the dynamics of a yoga class and how music affects the practice,” explained Liv. She added that the Juicy Sport collection encompassed both style and functionality, making it on trend to look great while getting a workout.
Speaking of style, the guests were also invited to view the collection, which is now in stores. Juicy Couture’s Spring 2014 Collection stays true to its playful spirit with a diverse range of styles: cheetah prints, eye-catching graphics, Bohemian glamour -it all exudes coolness without sacrificing on comfort.
The expansion into the active-wear category, Juicy Couture Sports, is further proof that the label carries customers from day to night easily and seamlessly.Contemporary multimedia artist, Baron Von Fancy, has also joined the brand in the season of love, to create a capsule collection of Juicy Couture’s catchphrases in his signature bold, hand-printed font.
To complement the sporty atmosphere, healthy food and beverages were served. Veganburg, an organic vegan burger fast food restaurant, served up cheese balls and vege-patty burgers. Local juicing start-up, Hic Juice, offered raw, organic cold-pressed juices, tying in the themes of sports, health and wellness.
Juicy Couture Sports and Spring 2014 Collections can be found at 391A Orchard Road Ngee Ann City Tower A #03-03 and at 2 Bayfront Avenue The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands #B1-78.

Presented by Obey, Syndicate invades 醉红楼 (Zui Hong Lou) this March to play host to one of the most prominent producer/DJ from the UK at the moment, Om Unit!
Going back to the basics, Jim Coles was first known as 2Tall and gave himself a new identity as Om Unit in 2010. Since then, Coles spent the years refining his unique blend of hip hop, drum & bass and Chicago footwork rhythms with releases on Goldie’s Metalheadz, dBridge’s Exit Records, Plastician’s Terrorhythm and Civil Music.
The RBMA 2011 graduate also has his own label Cosmic Bridge, where where he is responsible for introducing artists Danny Scrilla and Moresounds amongst others and has released a series of limited edition and now highly sought “Edits” 10′′s.
Om Unit debut in Singapore will be supported by the residents from the Syndicate stable. Other DJs that are joining this special night are the label’s latest signing, Intriguant, and bass stalwarts, Kiat & Darren Dubwise. What’s more exciting is that prior to kicking off the party, Syndicate continues its tradition for the search for new talents.
Another round of Beat Invitational showcase will take place in search for more musical talents made in Singapore. Covering a wide spectrum of sounds, the showcase will feature A.X.L., CrazyButCool, Derrick Motif, Pixel Apartment and Rafi Dean, who will be playing tracks from his upcoming EP.
SYNDICATE ft. OM UNIT will be happening on 8 March, Saturday, from 9pm to 2am at 醉红楼 (Zui Hong Lou), 8 Ann Siang Hill.
