For just one day on 16 April, BoConcept has decided to transform their showroom into a marketplace filled with shapes, colours, and materials for all to enjoy. In a bid to showcase the beauty and peace of a relaxing Scandinavian-type lifestyle, the company has brought together a collection of local producers in food, juice, apparel and lifestyle accessories.

As the Title Partner of Michelin Guide Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is proud to debut the first installation of Art at Curate, a Michelin star experience in partnership with Michelin Guide Singapore and Robert Parker Wine Advocate. Art at Curate will stage from 29 April to 6 May 2016 at Asia’s first Michelin chef showcase restaurant, CURATE, located at RWS.
CURATE, the latest addition to RWS culinary experience, provides a perennial stage exclusively for visiting Michelin-starred chefs from around the world to showcase their finest culinary creations. The inaugural edition of Art at Curate will feature three-star Italian Michelin chef, Massimiliano Alajmo.
Chef Alajmo started running his family restaurant, La Calandre, in Northern Italy in 1993 and clinched his three Michelin stars when he was just 28 years old, making him the youngest chef to achieve the highly coveted distinction. Today, the 42-year-old oversees the kitchens of La Calandre and the family’s other two restaurants, Ristorante Quadri and La Montecchi, with a total of five Michelin stars amongst them.
Well-known for his multi-sensory approach to cooking and penchant for exploring ingredients in depth to bring out their true essence and flavour, Chef Alajmo has a creative laboratory and culinary research centre within La Calandre. His dishes capture all senses, especially the most evocative sense of smell. According to Chef Alajmo, the ephemeral component of aroma is compensated by its immediacy and ability to create lasting memories, particularly in relation to food. With the selective use of exquisite seasonal ingredients, gourmands can expect distinctive food creations comparable to poetry on a plate.
Chef Alajmo is very excited to bring his culinary concept to Singapore. “Singapore is home to one of the world’s most dynamic food scenes. I am thrilled to explore it while I am in town and share with the people of this city both classic dishes from Le Calandre, as well as the fruit of our latest research,” said Chef Alajmo.
CURATE will present further editions of Art at Curate throughout the year, featuring modern European cuisines by a remarkable line-up of Michelin-starred chefs around the world. The visiting chefs will curate exclusive tasting menus at the restaurant throughout different times the year. During each edition, the chefs will also collaborate with a resident chef to create a signature menu to be served at the restaurant before the next event. With wine authority Robert Parker Wine Advocate, whose team of wine reviewers will personally hand-pick the wine pairings for the meals, the event will exclusively import limited edition and top-rated wines from the most sought-after producers around the world.

What happens when you give an amateur chef 48 hours, a professional kitchen crew, and the chance to create an original three-course dinner for a restaurant full of guests to love, hate, scrutinize, and everything in between?
That’s right : Kilo Under Pressure.
First Under Pressure event
After a 4-year-hiatus, Under Pressure returns this April, once again offering home cooks, amateur chefs, or budding culinary geniuses the chance to helm a restaurant and bring their gourmet dreams to life. This time, the playing field is at Kilo Orchard, a change from the previous installment held at Kilo Kallang, but the game plan remains the same: daring individuals can submit their applications, and shortlisted candidates will face Kilo in an interview and tasting process. The chosen chef will have Kilo’s support to prepare for and serve a dinner menu of three to five courses during the biggest challenge — service night.
The inaugural event in 2011 saw Kilo Kallang packed to the brim with excited diners, and a night full of firsts for everyone. The heat was on: tempers flared in the face of unexpected challenges, reviews were mixed, some guests were left to wait, and there was even one table that walked out. But as the night progressed, the initial fluster receded with Nithiya, our first chef, increasing in her confidence and understanding of what it takes to steer a kitchen.
“I’m exhausted, but I’m excited that I did it, and proud of myself.”
With the Under Pressure series, Kilo wishes to present culinary hopefuls a chance to live out their dreams and experience cooking in a proper kitchen — intense, exhausting, and complete with all its joy and drama.
Kilo has always been about embracing experiences, both old and new, and bringing together people from all walks of life. In the same line, Kilo wishes to support fledgling talent across all industries, be it in F&B, music, or art, and offer them a platform to showcase their creations. The Cooking Beats events, for example, has seen Kilo opening their kitchen to up-and-coming guest chefs from all over the world; while Kilo Dialogues created a safe space for explorative, thought-provoking performances, talks, dialogue sessions, and more.
Ultimately, Kilo hopes to encourage experimentation, and support undiscovered talent. The upcoming Under Pressure will be held at the end of April, and will be a ticketed event where guests pay for a prix fixe menu. Diners can expect a menu reflective of the chef’s individuality, backed by Kilo’s staff. It may turn out turbulent, but we promise a night of fun, laughter, and great food. For enthusiastic home cooks and chefs, it’s time to turn up the pressure; this is the perfect opportunity to take your hobby to the next level.

Masterchefs and Personalities
While WGS’s 20th year milestone is a showcase of world-class and Michelin-starred chefs, as well as Singapore’s own culinary stars and international industry experts; it will also see some of WGS’s esteemed alumni, the most notable being the return of WGS’s first visiting Masterchef Reto Mathis from St. Moritz in Switzerland.

Homegrown book retailer, Times, officially opened its seventh and biggest bookstore, spanning 7,335 sq ft, at Waterway Point in Punggol on Wednesday, 09 March 2016. Attended by nearly 200 guests, comprising members of the media, Times’ VIPs and business partners, this milestone occasion marked the brand’s entry into the North-Eastern heartland of Singapore with an exciting new concept that caters to the varied interests and ages of consumers, especially children and families.
Established in 1978, Times is a leading retailer of English language books and complementary products in the region with a chain of bookstores throughout Singapore and Malaysia. Times Waterway Point is the seventh bookstore in Singapore for the group. Adopting a cheerful orange palette, complemented by warm brown hues of wood structures and trims, this new bookstore exudes a welcoming and cosy vibe that makes browsing and shopping for books and lifestyle merchandise a delight.
Hosted by ex-ChannelNewsAsia anchor, Suzanne Jung, guests were treated to champagne and canapés as they arrived at the expansive bookstore, well-presented with a wide array of books of all genres, educational tools, collectible merchandise, lifestyle products and gift options. Besides the lifestyle editors of key media, familiar faces who turned up to join in the celebration included ex-veteran journalist and author Sylvia Toh Paik Choo, Class95 DJ Yasminne Cheng, ex-Singapore Idol alumni Maia Lee, homegrown illusionists Ning Cai and Alexander Yuen, amongst others.

After the official opening, guests were invited to explore the bookstore that houses the very first Times Junior, a dedicated fun learning and social space of nearly 1,600 sq ft for children to browse, read and interact with other children or bond with their parents over books. Another key feature of the bookstore is the one-of-its-kind Lifestyle Space that can be transformed into a private room to conduct workshops, classes, activities and even small celebration parties for children and families.
To further illustrate the fun vibe and creative environment at Times, four stations, each with an engaging activity, were set up around the bookstore for guests to partake in. They included a personalised wire bookmark-making station where guests’ names were formed using a wire that can be used as a bookmark; a cocoa “mug” cake-making station for those with a sweet tooth; an Elmo and Cookie Monster pom-pom making station that was highly-popular with children; and a customised aromatherapy oil station that helped guests pick out the scent that they like best, be it for relaxation or to refresh themselves.

NATO straps are flexible and practical, but they certainly lack a healthy dose of personality. Thus, when graphic designer Ivan Chua yearned for a way to customize the looks of his favourite wristwatches, VARIO was born.
With the help of his team, Ivan designed a selection of 10 unique printed themes in 3 different sizes (18,20,22mm) for his custom VARIO straps. When asked why he decided on using NATO straps, Ivan cited his experience with them as “comfortable, washable, and the perfect material for summer heat”.
However, embarking on a new business is never easy. As such, the young designer has turned to crowdfunding on platform indiegogo in order to raise a total fund value of USD5,000 for his campaign.

The O.P.E.N is looking for a tribe of committed participants to be in the first ever performance of Speak Cryptic’s iconic artwork.
The Singapore International Festival of Arts’ pre-festival public engagement initiative – The O.P.E.N., will be held from June 23 to July 9 this year.
One of the highlights of The O.P.E.N. – Club Malam, is an immersive evening, made up of several interweaving performances by several artists in collaboration with Noorlinah Mohamed, Director of The O.P.E.N. Inspired by the night club scenes of the 50s and 60s, and yet different, Club Malam offers a series of ‘happenings’, popping up within the space, giving the audience a sense of the imagined world created in Club Malam. One of four anchor pieces for Club Malam is Speak Cryptic’s The Tribe, the first-ever performance inspired by his iconic characters that are featured in his art works. The intention is to have each character be brought alive by 100 public participants, breathing and living, among the ‘visitors’ of Club Malam.
As such, the O.P.E.N. seeks fun-loving, passionate and curious-minded individuals as performers of Speak Cryptic’s The Tribe. Auditions will be held on 19 March. Successful participants will then begin rehearsals (only on Saturdays) from 26 March till 2 July. Technical set-up and runs from 4, 5 and 6 July. Performance dates – 7, 8, 9 July.

Futura (American, b. 1955), alias of Leonard McGurr, is an artist currently living and working in New York and closely associated with the street art movement of the 1980s. Preceding the year 2000, the artist referred to himself as Futura 2000, a moniker he coined at the age of 15. Following the millennium, he shortened his pen name to Futura, as he is now known. An active participant in the graffiti movement as a youth, he made the transition to a more abstract canvas in 1980, with particular motivations to transcend the barriers between street, commercial and fine art. His works explore the disjointed but seemingly coordinate worlds of the gallery space and street art through a series of largely abstract compositions drawing on both street and fine art.
