Yong Bae Seok, a South Korean fashion and industrial designer who is now based in Europe recently collaborated with PONY to launch a capsule collection which reflects the brand’s US heritage and basketball style.
The designer earned a degree in industrial design at Hansung University in Seoul and continued his education in Italy at the IED (Istituto Europeo del Deisgn) where he got his master’s degree in industrial design. He has worked with many footwear brand thus far and is currently the head of design at Tod’s Men’s sports division.
Our team had a chance to speak to him at Street Superior 2018, where he explained his collaboration with PONY and his next projects.
Why did you choose to collaborate with PONY?
I have always admired the American culture and PONY is a symbol of a heritage US sneaker. The brand sums up various components including the basketball world and today’s ‘80s and ‘90s comeback. This collaboration provided me with an opportunity to give its heritage a modern touch.
What are the highlights of this capsule collection?
I redesigned PONY’s signature City Wings by adding my own twist to it. Coming from an industrial design background, comfort and functionality is key. The trendy laceless elastic band takes over the shoe laces to provide quick adjustment and secure foothold. I also took its iconic side and made it look even more geometric, adding bold color to have a strong visual impact.
What inspired this collection?
My inspiration came from the Vitra Fire Station, a building in Weil Am Rhein, designed by Zaha Hadid. This work of hers is characterized by diagonal and parallel lines which was different and a new way of reinterpretation. The design appears clean with well-balanced spaces while adding a strong visual impact. Similarly, inspired by the strong angular lines of her work, I added a modern touch to my work with red and blue geometric block colors.
What will you be focusing on next?
I started my own brand, Seok and will be focusing more on that next. It was first launched in s/s 2018 and the sneakers line’s name is DECON to express the deconstruction of the shoe, which is made up of different parts meticulously put together by hand. At the moment, footwear is my main priority. However, in future, I also want to make products in different categories, with my industrial design background.
PONY X YBS will be available from 15 November at Tangs Orchard, Level 3 and Robinsons @ Heeren, Level 4

Converse collaborates with Brain Dead, an LA-based clothes brand with a mission to bring their unique taste in art into tangible form. Inspired by everything that is underground subculture, Converse x Brain Dead focuses on a compelling graphics story across footwear and apparels.
Using the Chuck 70 as a silhouette for expression between the Converse and Brain Dead, these prints were mashed together to create a bold and energizing graphic statement that connects to Brain Dead’s unique and irreverent graphics.
Core to the entire collection is a split screen approach that sees different prints and silhouette being combined into one. The sneakers utilize various patterns from the Converse archive to create a unique design. The canvas is covered in zebra print and duck camouflage with red-and-white stripes running down the heel. It features leopard print on the lateral side and navy with white stars on the right, and giraffe print on the heel. Each tongue features black-and-white polka dots. Common details seen on each shoe include a rubber Brain Dead logo stamped on the lateral heel and phrases like, “To See And Be Seen As Far As The Eye Can See,” wrapping the midsole.
To go along with the footwear, the collection also sees long sleeve tees (SGD89.90) and pocket tees (SGD59.90).
Converse x Brain Dead retails at Limited Edt Vault, Limited Edition Chamber, Converse Ngee Ann City and Converse Vivo City from today at SGD159.90

Innovation is always grounded in history. Cutting-edge concepts are born from the archive. How can we design for the future without an appreciation for our past?
Introducing Never Made, a revolutionary footwear concept inspired by the past, designed for the future. Past icons from the Adidas archive are reimagined, as their soles are swapped with the brand’s most innovative toolings. Featuring eight distinct silhouettes, the newest Adidas Originals footwear concept provides a window into the brand’s design process. Inspired by internal design workshops, which see the brand’s designers explore unexpected combinations, the collection is a manifestation of ideas into reality.
Instantly recognizable 70’s aesthetics are reimagined through the Line of Descent series, which sees iconic archival-inspired silhouettes merged with current day technologies. Reimagined atop 4D carbon-printed tooling, the vintage-inspired I-5923 silhouette is transformed into the Ix4D.
Similarly, the COUNTRYxKAMANDA merges aggressive all-terrain-inspired detailing from two eras.
Rounding off the Line of Descent series is the MARATHONx5923, which sees one of the brand’s earliest running silhouettes remade with BOOST technology, bringing the past into the future in unexpected ways.
Looking to one of the brand’s modern day icons, the genealogy of NMD series revisits three key sources of inspiration from the 80’s, placing the silhouettes atop NMD_R1 tooling to create the MICROPACERxR1, BOSTONSUPERxR1, and RISINGSTARxR1.
Turning to one of the most important decades in Adidas Original’s recent history, the genetically Modified 90’s Tech series sees two iconic footwear concepts, Feet You Wear and EQT, brought firmly into the future – reimagined atop BOOST tooling to create 98xCRAZYBYW and ZX930xEQT.
Inspired by our past in order to inform the future, the Never Made collection seeks to reinvent the design process through experimentation with unexpected combinations.
The Never Made collection retails from SGD200 to SGD300 at Adidas Originals Pacific Plaza and online at https://www.adidas.com.sg/nevermade.
*Please note that the Ix4D will not be available in Singapore.

PONY has launched an exclusive capsule collection designed by South Korean fashion and industrial designer, Yong Bae Seok, who has collaborated with names likes Dolce & Gabbana, Diesel, Bally and Tod’s.
The PONY x Yong Bae Seok collection will reflect the brand’s US heritage and classic basketball style by looking into redesigning PONY’s signature City Wings. The collaborative line showcases the selection in premium quality leather while paying tribute to PONY’s original colors. It features six colorways – three for low cut and three for high cut.
Inspired by the strong angular lines of Zaha Hadid’s Vitra Fire Station, Yong added his modern interpretation into the design, with bold red and blue geometric block colors to give a strong visual impact.
The low cut features a trendy laceless elastic upper, replacing shoelaces while the high cut incorporates a velcro strap to provide quick adjustment and secure foothold. In addition, the signature City Wings logo is hidden underneath the strap.

In a second collaboration, Off White says goodbye to the translucent upper from the May release and takes the more traditional approach using the Chuck 70 model. Devoid of any transparency, this new collection takes a more traditional canvas-ridden upper done up in white with all of Virgil Abloh’s unique embellishments.
Virgil Abloh, the creative and cultural polymath, re-envisions the iconic Chuck Taylor 70 sneaker through the prism of his Off-White fashion label. His interpretation of the classic silhouette is both reverential and irreverent: Abloh preserves traditional genetic coding like vintage canvas and the “license plate”, while adding tabs on the ankle patch, a bright orange sole, overlays with Off-White’s distinctive black-and-white warning stripes, and his trademark subversive labelling on the shoelaces.
With Abloh’s deft contemporary riff on a timeless design, the Off-White Chuck 70 is a visually-striking statement piece that remains as wearable as always.
Available at Limited Edt Vault and Dover Street Market Singapore on October 9 for SGD209.90

Constantly looking to challenge the labels attached to the Undercover brand, founding designer Jun Takahashi applied elements from his Fall 2018 collection “Order/Disorder” onto the canvas of the Converse Chuck 70.
Converse x Undercover explores the dichotomy that exists between Takahashi’s designs while harnessing the versatility of the iconic Converse silhouette. As a brand that straddles the street and the runway, Takahashi reinterpreted the Chuck 70 to create contradiction and elicit the notion of reflection and tension.
Having debuted during Pitti Uomo in January, the collection takes a dystopian approach to contrast through its application of materials and colors. It features four distinct colorways—Black, White, Racing Red and Buttercup—on vintage canvas. The words “ORDER” and “DISORDER” are printed on the silhouette’s high-gloss toe box, with matching colors on the contrasting toe bumpers.
Each pair also features silver hardware, co-branded sock liners and tonal laces for a sleek expression.
The Converse x Undercover collection drops on September 25 at END Clothing at SGD145 and, Dover Street Market & Club 21 at SGD180.

Founded in Hong Kong, OnTheList is an independent, members-only flash sales concept platform, that is set to revolutionise the luxury retail landscape in Asia. This September, it will be expanding to Singapore, with its first overseas flash sale taking place between 19 to 22 September at Ngee Ann City in the heart of the iconic Orchard Road shopping district.
Founded in 2016 by two French entrepreneurs, Delphine Lefay and Diego Dultzin Lacoste, OnTheList pioneered the unique concept of independent, members-only flash sales in Asia.
Co-founder Delphine Lefay explains its founding, “When I was working in Hong Kong’s retail industry, there was an absence of options for distributors and brands to clear old inventory occupying valuable warehouse space. To fill this gap, we founded OnTheList as an independent third-party platform and it was the first of its kind in Asia.”
“Through flash sales we hosted, we offered consumers access to premium products at attractive prices, and brands the opportunity to clear past-season items and connect with new customers,” she adds.
“This method of clearing stock also promotes sustainability and minimises environmental impact within the retail industry, as old inventory does not go to waste,” co-founder Diego Dultzin Lacoste notes. “OnTheList’s business model also gives brands the opportunity to reach out to a wider consumer database, engaging them through the flash sale platform as a first touch point.”
Its success is indeed phenomenal in turning old inventory into new opportunities as, in two short years, the small business has gone from a few pop-up sales to over 150 flash sales and partnerships with over 250 premium brands, including Armani, Clarins, Diane Von Furstenberg, Ferragamo, Kenzo, Roberto Cavalli, and Ted Baker Le Creuset and Havaianas. Consistently producing stellar sales, it has cleared over a million items from its brand partners at stunning rates – in 2017, they sold a pair of Havianas every six seconds over a four-day sale in Hong Kong.
In Singapore, the company will launch with monthly pop-up sales, announcing participating brands just ten days prior to the sale.
Membership is free and OnTheList is now accepting sign-ups for its upcoming Singapore sales at www.onthelist.sg, and pre-registration is required for receipt of a personalised barcode used to access the sales venue. Sales are held over a short time frame of just four days, with stock replenished daily, and a team of staff who will ensure that crowds are kept to a minimum. Customers are also assured of the authenticity and proper authorisation of their purchases as OnTheList works directly with brands and distributors.

Clothes help bind us to our gender. They define us, but do they confine us?
Stars from the Stars
This season at Moschino, Jeremy Scott ventures deep into Area 51 territory to concoct a collection that puts conspiracy theory into fashion practice. What if extra-terrestrials really did walk among us? What if Marilyn Monroe really was knocked off by the feds to stop her spilling the beans about her Roswell pillow talk with JFK?? And – deep breath – wasn’t Jackie O too perfect to be human???
The parallel narratives of the paranoid are deployed by Scott to create a collection that’s so real it’s unreal. Our first contact comes via a series of out of this world dresses and separates that mix just so mid-century daywear with the cut and zippers of the iconic Moschino biker jacket.
The colors are pumped: Scott ventured beyond the realms of Pantone this season to discover powerful shades that have fallen into disuse. Some looks feature wide vertical stripes, others touches of leather, and yet other sports-touched looks come in a three colorway, cracked zig-zag brocade. A Moschino foulard print is twisted with polka-pixels. We see Venus in faux furs. Everything’s matchy-matchy. She’s fabulous – and she’s not from around here.
Further frazzle is delivered thanks to this season’s capsule collection, a collaboration with the awesome Australian artist Ben Frost. Presented on the FW 18-19 fashion show runway, the capsule pairs the brand’s ironic, irreverent spirit with Frost’s visual approach, blending fashion, pop-art and a cartoon style in a series of brand new graphics and overlays that reinterpret the contemporary mainstream iconography.
MoCola soda bubbles and the Fresh detergent bin alternate with images and writing taken from packaging used for popsicles, candies, cereals and pills complete with directions and nutritional values. At the same time, Frost reworks his famous women’s faces and eyes in both the macro version and in original mash-ups recreated on inlays and prints seasonal technicolor.
The capsule is made up of an increasingly wide and varied selection of t-shirts, t-shirt dresses, sweatshirts, knitwear and jersey dresses, while the line of coordinated accessories plays with leather and PVC, offering various shapes and models including pouches, backpacks, shopper bags and shoulder bags adorned with metal chains. The range also includes a slip-on sneaker with contrasting sole, a wallet, a baseball cap and iPhone covers, becoming true collector’s items for fashionistas all over the world.

1997 was seminal as a year during which two icons were born. The first, the adidas Originals Falcon Dorf runner. A shoe which paid homage to the attitude of the time; strong creatives who shifted boundaries and paved the path for future rebels to walk forth with. The second was Kylie Jenner; one of the most-recognised people on the planet. Beauty boss, entrepreneur, and style icon, Jenner has subverted the expectations placed on young women by establishing herself as a business mogul and a creative visionary who refuses to allow anything to stand in her way.
Now, Jenner and Falcon join forces in honor of Adidas Originals, with the icon debuting in the brand’s Falcon campaign. Falcon’s blueprint, the Falcon Dorf, came-of-age in the late 90s as a daring statement injected into the pinnacle of an era where women weren’t afraid to break the rules and speak their truths. With its groundbreaking design, this silhouette pushed the boundaries of what a sports shoe could be with its fashion-forward edge.
“I love 90s style,” reveals Jenner. “It’s really inspired many of the colour choices in my beauty collections. These looks are definitely a throwback to that time.”
Mined from the Adidas Originals archives, two-decades on, Falcon is reborn for a new generation. Whilst holding tight to these core values that established it as a revolutionary force, Falcon is fresh and evolved in a grey, pink, black, and blue colourway.
Its maximalist design seamlessly pairs with Jenner’s own desire for striking palettes and bold designs, with key features including a panelled construction in classic mesh and suede overlays, a moulded heel unit, and reflective detailing. The rubber midsole ties the Falcon together, with juxtaposing accents of colour on the forefoot and heel to create a confident silhouette that bridges 90s nostalgia with modern energy.
The Falcon’s bold attitude is in sync with Jenner’s way of life – a mindset which has propelled her beauty business and established her as a cultural icon. It’s a shoe that knows that the only way to make an impact – and have some fun – is by taking risks.
The new Falcon footwear (SGD150) in a grey, pink, black, and blue colourway, as well as a triple white iteration, is available from today at Adidas Originals Pacific Plaza, Adidas Originals Bugis+, Adidas VivoCity, Limited Edt, Seek, Leftfoot Zalora, AW Lab, and online at adidas.com.sg.

Fitness and fashion go together these days – and looking stylish for a workout have been essential for many women. Homegrown fitness wear label, Tough Cookie’s designs are anything but typical. It is a one-of-a-kind fitness wear that is fun and fashionable, so you can exercise in both comfort and style.
All their pieces are designed for layering, with intricate knotted back details, halter necklines and tie-them-yourself straps. The brand’s signature pieces are its sports bras, bottoms and tights that are suitable for yoga, aerial exercises and even swimming. With its thoughtful details, Tough Cookie’s apparels ensure that you look presentable – whether you are in or out of the studio.
During the summer, Tough Cookie launched its Greece collection inspired by the beautiful island of Santorini. The blue and white color palette of the pieces pays homage to its architecture. The Greece collection features multi-functional sports bras that can be worn in different styles by switching up the straps. The tops and bottoms are even designed to double up as swimwear.
This collection is the brand’s first foray into digital printing. Notably, the biggest challenge was sourcing for the blue and white marble print that runs throughout the collection, chosen to reflect the water and allude to the curvature of Santorini’s buildings. To ensure that this collection looks flattering on the body, every single piece has the exact same print placement – this alone took an experimenting period of six months.
The Greece collection is now available on the Tough Cookie online store. Tough Cookie items can be found in Uppercut Boxing Singapore, Yoga Lab and Pole Lab. Watch their Instagram (@toughcookieapparel) for information on pop up stories in various fitness studios.

The Converse Rated One Star campaign, which took root in Spring/Summer 2018, aims to inspire youths to embrace individuality and to go against the grain. Determination and a fearless attitude are the essence of the Converse Rated One Star campaign.
For this season, Converse has enlisted singer/music producer Zayn Malik as the brand’s global ambassador to front the Converse Rated One Star Campaign. Known for his chart-topping hits, the musician has been described as one of the most recognizable artists of his generation.
Closer to home, the campaign is fronted by Singaporean singer/songwriter Sam Rui (@sammirui) and filmmaker Jasper Tan (@vilecorpses), both were selected for their defiant style and contributions to Singapore’s music and arts culture. The Rated One Star collective feature in a lookbook showcasing the season’s Converse One Star shoes including the boldly coloured Converse One Star Carnival pack.
The Converse One Star Carnival pack introduces vibrant summer vibes to its 2018 Fall/Holiday line up. The shoes are jam-packed with attitude, taking cues from the bold colours of the ‘90s and the colour blocking trend in skate culture. The Converse One Star Carnival pack is crafted with premium suede upper, bold colours and a contrasting star underlay. The shoes are fitted with Ortholite insole for cushioning.
The One Star Carnival pack (in Bold Mandarin, Enamel Red and Apple Green; SGD139.90) and the One Star Vintage Suede (in Black and Field Surplus; SGD129.90) are now available in Singapore at all Converse boutiques.

New Era – an established brand in all things headwear, has opened up their first flagship store in Singapore at Vivo City.
A veteran in the industry, New Era has a rich history dating back to 1920. Over the years, the brand has accumulated an impressive amount of over 500 portfolios, working with prestigious companies such as Disney, Marvel Comics, Ultraman, and even with bands like Rolling Stones, and Guns and Roses, just to name a few. And this does not just end there, New Era is also an official headwear brand for American sports league MLB, MBA, and NFL.
Aside from collaborations, New Era has also made it a point to introduce new product lines that will bring in merchandises suitable for all age groups. The brand started with an original line of 59Fifty, and then a parallel line of 59Fifty Woman designed for ladies out there looking for a cap fitting in all the right proportions. Other than the classic 59Fiftys, New Era also has 49Forty that is designed to be more contoured and fitted, 39Thirty that features a stretch-comfort fit, and 29Twenty that has an adjustable fit, all introduced in line with their customers in mind. Aside from these collections, the EK collection is also an initiative done up by New Era to honour their founder, Ehrhardt Koch, that will bring vintage styles to new heights by infusing it with modern touches fitting for current fashion trends.
With such an impressive portfolio, New Era doesn’t just stop there. In the recent years, they have also gone on to creating apparels and accessories for fans who just can’t get enough of them.
The Vivo City’s flagship store will be offering cap personalization services and Singapore exclusive visor caps and tees specially produced for their dedicated audiences on Sunny Singapore.
New Era’s Singapore flagship store is located at VIVO City’s newest wing #B1-20.
