Community is important to the soul. It’s the pepperoni to pizza, the whip cream to a banana split, and the juicy patty to an otherwise non-existent burger. Community brings people together, unifies them with a single factor, and encourages growth. The Converse’s CONS Project: Singapore was the iconic brand’s way of gathering budding arts enthusiasts and immersing them in the community by letting them rub shoulders with big names that have something to teach.
CONS Project Singapore launched a two-day initiative designed to engage the next generation of creative spirits through music, art and skate. Despite the limited space, over 70 attendees – budding artists, aspiring DJs skaters, bloggers, and walk-in participants – came to meet like-minded folks.
Day one was a mix of art and music. Two interactive street art workshops featuring Inkten, Clogtwo and Zero of the RSCLS crew introduced the audience to what it means to be a street artist. The skilled urban artists engaged the audience with personal anecdotes, including their experiences with the street art culture in Atlanta, USA and Melbourne, Australia, where Inkten and Clogtwo were invited to leave their creative mark. They also guided the participants in a hands-on activities where the group experienced firsthand, the techniques behind silk screening, graffiti writing, and mural painting.
The evening session was a focus on the art of music, headed by DJ KoFlow, a Singapore DMC Champion. DJ KoFlow demonstrated his expertise in scratching – a distinctive DJ technique – and shared with the participants other fundamental practices to acing the turntables. The participants then had their chance to take over the turntables, scratching and mixing records to showcase their freshly-learnt skills.
A skate insta-video workshop at Sultan Gate, conducted by the Converse APAC Skate Team + Preduce, was the main star of Day Two. The participants, who brought their own skateboards, smartphones, and other video recording equipment, engaged in a thrilling and educational session that resulted in a series of skate videos.
Both skaters and non-skaters mingled and shared their knowledge with one another, joining in the fun of an after-party at Aliwal Arts Centre. Participants, artists, and skate crew chatted over gourmet burgers and delish onion rings. Guests were also treated to a live set by DJ KoFlow and displays of the latest Converse CONS collection.
The Converse CONS collection is available nationwide at selected Converse boutiques.
