This AW2014, Dr. Martens puts a new spin on their classic silhouettes. Yet, this new spin comes from a concept simpler than you’d think – the fuss-free, low-key factory footwear that was highly appealing to early skinheads.
The Kristinn Lace Shoe from the Men’s collection for example, combines an industrial silhouette with ski-hook eyelets. The same ski-hooks are used on the Assange 8-Eye Lace Boot, as well as a subtle black-on-black script on the heel tag. These two styles create a vintage impression, offered on the sturdy Ben outsole.
Taking inspiration from factory steelies, which the skinheads often got from their worker dads, the Core Applique Grip Shoe and Grasp Boot both feature an exposed, fully external metal toe cap. This goes well with silver eyelets, black welt stitches, and a subtle heel tag script.
In the women’s collection, four unusual new leathers have been applied to classic DM’s silhouettes. The Virginia is an extremely soft and supple leather, the Crackle Suede is a rich and aged leather, modernised by a subtle sparkling edge, and the Mirror Shift Suede combines a snakeskin surface with an iridescent, reflective finish, similar to a glittered mirrorball. Lastly, the High Shine Snake has a very textured and glossy finish that lifts this popular animal print.
Another highlight of the women’s collection is the Elphie Ghillie Pump, which originated in Celtic traditional dance, but has since become a modern fashion style.
The collection is available at Dr. Martens stores from December 2014. Prices range from SGD160 – SGD239 for women’s styles and SGD179 – SGD319 for Men.
