“We pursue style, not fashion. There’s a difference.” – It’s something I emphasise of Nookmag’s stance on the subject of wearing and looking good. In fashion, we may find style, but not the other way around.
This is why Nooked even exists in the first place. Our street style segment celebrates individuals who are proud to flaunt a style that belongs only to them. Covering Taipei’s street style at Taipei in Style in early November was a highlight for the magazine. Excited to dress in our personal favourites, our street style photographer Phoebe Chin (aka Unicorn Huntress) and I were armed with our respective weapons of choice – a camera and a notebook + pen – to hunt down unique styles and designers.
As hoped for, Taipei in Style was a gathering ground for style curators, individuals who live and breathe fashion as well as those who simply dress for themselves. Being engrossed in a new environment with personalities who possess a fresh take on style was overwhelmingly inspiring to say the least.
Most of the style savvy individuals whom we spoke with wear and dress as they fancy – no fashion theories or style guides to follow. A couple of other notable phenomena we observed were how the Taiwanese support their local labels, designers and independent stores as well as how they exhibit their individuality through intricately handmade apparels and accessories.
While there was much to discover and soak up at Taipei in Style, we also found time to explore the streets and back alleys of the city at night. Street food and bargains were sweet highlights to conclude each day and all that accompanied us home were sights, sounds and smells of the hustle and bustle.
