The video of a BBC host cooking rice had Asians cringing over the weekend. We, Asians take pride in our fried rice, and especially the way we cook rice. It’s no secret that our society is closely linked to the delicious grain – it’s a diet staple! Being a major source of carbohydrate, it is almost impossible to remove rice from our plates.
The video, published in April 2019, was brought to light by UK-based Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng, also known as Uncle Roger, who posted his video reacting to it. BBC Food host Hersha Patel began her recipe by filling up a pan with unwashed rice grains, followed by water. Just when we thought she would rinse them, she proceeded to boil the rice right away!
If you think she did a grave mistake, it wasn’t the only one. Even before the rice had been fully soaked and cooked, Patel drains the pan with a strainer and – get this – ran tap water to rinse the semi-cooked rice! *gasp* She then went on to fry the classic egg fried rice.
In his reaction video, Ng expressed confusion and shock over the way the rice was cooked. However, with a twist of events, Uncle Roger posted on his Twitter account that he had contacted Patel and a collaboration video is coming soon! Patel promised that this time, she will show how she actually cooks rice.
To all my new friends/haters @MrNigelNg and I have just had a lovely afternoon discussing my 'crimes' against rice… watch this space.. collab coming soon, give me a follow! #riceislife #uncleroger pic.twitter.com/vQivHNp9V5
