To celebrate International Women’s Day (8 March), Malaysians of both genders have gathered in Kuala Lumpur for the annual #WomensMarchMY. Though with the rising concerns of the coronavirus outbreak, it did not falter the spirit of the attendees marching for a greater future.
The march began in front of SOGO Department Store to an area of the junction between Jalan Raja and Jalan Tun Perak, approximately 1km. The crowd, primarily the youth, comprises of all genders, not just women.
Among the 7 listed demands, banning child marriages is an issue that was strongly disagreed among the crowd. In Malaysia, child marriages are currently supported in 7 states. The crowd urges for an immediate ban as opposed to a 5-year plan to eliminate the problem. The peaceful rally was a success with 13 speakers and 2 poets addressing many issues of the marginalised.
We hope the march will have a positive impact for a better Malaysia tomorrow.
