With the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee, get ready to perk-up your day with an Italian touch. Allow your senses to draw you into the spacious and homely café situated in the basement of South Beach Avenue, with its tasteful and modern Italian décor – Italian oak walls, wooden floorboards, brown eco-leather banquettes – you will forget you are right in the middle of a bustling city centre.
An ancient Piedmont coffee-maker and one of Italy’s most prestigious beverage manufacturer is proud to launch the world’s 100th Caffè Vergnano 1882 concept café in Singapore with an 114sqm, 42-seater chic space that exudes and represents true Italian coffee culture. The 1882 concept café springs from a desire to reinterpret coffee tradition in a contemporary way so as to offer consumers authentic Italian espresso.
Espresso, which originated in Italy in the early 20th century, is a concentrated, bittersweet coffee; the word espresso referring to the speed and single-serve nature of the coffee. The story of Passion began with Dominico Vergnano in 1882 when he started the company in the small town of Cheri, in the foothills of Turin. He soon realized that his expertise laid in the accurate selection and roasting of coffee beans.
That one shop soon became three, followed by a bold move of purchasing a coffee plantation in Kenya. The rest, they say is written in the records of coffee history. Today, the company exports to over 70 countries, owns 100 Caffè Vergnano 1882 coffee shops and remains proudly family-owned with direct descendants of Dominico involved in the daily running of this coffee empire.
The Vergnano family attributes the success of their business to their experience and expertise in the meticulous selection of the best coffee beans right down to the extraordinary production process. Using a time-consuming slow-roasting method (18-22 minute cycles) instead of a commercial “turbo toasting” one (5-6 minute cycles), the flavours and aromas of the bean, patiently extracted and personally inspected to produce an evenly balanced roast. Each origin is roasted separately to perfection to accentuate the full aroma and quality of each and every bean.
The 1882 Espresso blend is available only at Caffè Vergnano coffee shops around the world. Besides the mainstay 1882 espresso that is the ultimate expression of true Italian coffee, a wide range of delicious and satisfying espresso-based drinks such as Caffè Gianduja (Italian thick hot chocolate, espresso, whipped cream), Marocchino Speciale (Espresso, foamed milk, chocolate powder, chocolate cream), Delizioso (Espresso, foamed milk, nutella, whipped cream) and a Turin signature – the Bicerin, a traditional warm concoction of espresso and luxurious cocoa topped with cream are available on the menu for those who are not in too much of a hurry.
Priced between SGD3.50 to SGD6 for a regular sized cup and SGD4.50 to SGD7 for a large dose, affordable premium espresso doesn’t get any easier for anyone to try.
