Fresh off her debut EP release last week, Jasmine Sokko drops a new single ‘#0000FF’ (which is the CMYK code for the colour blue) – a song about embracing a boy with suicidal tendencies. Written by the singer-producer, the tune is co-produced and mixed by Singapore electronic wunderkind MYRNE. ‘#0000FF’ is released by Dutch electronic music label KnightVision Records, a Warner Music Europe imprint on Friday, 29 September.
More often than not, the media has delivered depictions of mental illness which are portrayed through beautiful yet tortured characters. Such portrayals often glamorise mental health issues, causing undesirable morbid fantasies.
One of the most misinformed facts is that depression fully equates to sadness. At times, it is closer to feeling absolutely nothing. That would mean that the particular boy probably does not reciprocate in the same way. Jasmine Sokko shares, “You would end up being one of many others who are willing to sit through the wall of silence from that boy and wait for the storm to clear.”
‘#0000FF’ addresses the semi-autobiographical story of a female protagonist who attempts to break that wall of silence and engage the boy suffering from depression in hopes of getting some form of affection back.
On working with the singer-producer, Friso Venema, CEO of KnightVision Records informs, “We discovered her on Spotify. For me, it was the distinctive and authentic sound that got us interested. It’s real and a bit different from what’s a lot out there right now.”
