When was the last time you picked up a book and savoured every word in it? If it was ages ago, you may like to be inspired to start reading again. The latest issue of the visually led quarterly Kult magazine explores the subject of reading, with a series of book covers re-interpreted by a group of young and upcoming artists from Asia and across the world.
The collection of books was selected by the Singapore National Library Board based on classic titles that have shaped and influenced readers over the last 40 years. The local and international titles vary from classics like Shakespeare, Orwell and Agatha Christie to Children’s favourites such as the Ladybird series to local Chinese, Tamil and Malay titles such as Salina. Featuring over 40 titles chosen by National Library research, the ‘Read’ issue is being released as part of the nationwide Read! Singapore campaign which aims to make reading a more prominent part of our culture.
Editor Steve Lawler says, “As young people spend more and more time watching TV and surfing the web, and with bookshops closing down, the result is that they are reading a lot less. We hope this issue will reintroduce some of the classics to mainstream culture and inspire young people to pick up a book.”
This latest issue will be available for international purchase at the Kult online store, Kult Gallery as well as 100 locations around Singapore.
