For Fall/Winter 2012, Lacoste L!VE invited American illustrator Micah Lidberg to collaborate on a capsule collection flaunting his signature illustrations for both men and women.
Micah is based in Kansas City but his experiences living in several part of the USA as well as studying in Brighton, England, have contributed to his sincere love for practical design, bizarre phenomenon, and wonders of nature and travel. His favourite materials are pencil and paper and he loves making complex things with simple means. Micah adores pattern, colour and the notion that images are a very potent and direct mode of communication.
His work has been exhibited at Illustrative 08 in Zurich, Archive Gallery in California, Open Space Gallery in New York, LCB Depot & Coningsby Gallery as well as It’s Nice That in London.
Here’s the talented artist in his own words…
Could you describe your work?
My work tends to be very colourful, elaborate, and full of motion. Since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed drawing creatures and environments. That’s still a strong theme in my work. I’m shaken up by nature – every bit of it. It’s certainly a very deep and very wide thing. With nature, there’s plenty of room to explore and plenty to share.
Why did you start making art?
I’m not sure why I started making art. I know that it’s something that has always been with me. I think my interest in art might have something to do with my curiosity about the world. When I’m making something, it feels like a way to think about the universe and my feelings about it. My work has always felt like a form of play.
What do you think about Lacoste L!VE?
Lacoste is a brand that I’ve loved for a long time. My personal style tends to gravitate towards lots of classic and simple pieces paired with an element of something fantastic and energetic. Lacoste is great about providing both those things. I think Lacoste L!VE is a really great, youthful brand. It’s built around a classic aesthetic but embraces invention. I think that’s something my generation is looking for today.
Can you describe the capsule collection you created for Lacoste L!VE?
I wanted my collection to have some elements of familiarity but, at the same time, reflect the energy and optimism that’s happening now. I’ve used a lot of bright colours and motion and it’s filled with absurd creatures and stories. It’s a little bit of my favourite things from when I was a kid, and a lot of the attitude I love today. There are some gems from childhood – Dinosaurs, Flying Saucers, Jungles, Unicorns… And I reinterpreted the classic RENE shoe with animal prints. I wanted to make a collection that was for the young at heart. For me, being an adult has nothing to do with being ‘older’ . Old just means you’ve lost your sense of wonder.
What is Unconventional Chic for you?
Unconventional Chic for me is about being content and comfortable with who you are, and integrating and respecting the world around you. It’s a very beautiful and rare balance.
