Patterns are the building blocks of any designs. With an adroit and creative composition, they can convey emotions, messages and notions. Pushing the boundaries of pattern design is MIGO, a label from Hong Kong that experiments with patterns in a playful manner to deliver positive messages.
MIGO was founded by Mike in 2012, a lover of graphic arts who is passionate about patterns since he was young. Currently, the label produces a range of bags, underwear and apparels that act as canvases for its visually appealing designs created with patterns. The products not only ace in the graphics department, they are also of high quality and comfort.
Nookmag (N): Hey Mike, tell us more about the early days of MIGO and how the brand flourished.
Mike (M): MIGO started with pattern design on a range of underwear and clothing in Hong Kong and China. It was a successful start as many customers would repeatedly purchase our underwear for themselves and their friends as gifts. We wanted to present more patterns and found that backpacks are a good option and platform for our designs.
N: MIGO’s tagline is “We Create Patterns”. What is it about patterns that fascinates you?
M: My design team and I love pattern designing a lot. We can express our feelings through our patterns and we enjoy the whole process of making patterns on our products. When we attend fashion fairs and meet customers, we learn how to insert our patterns onto different products and make them suitable for different markets.
N: What is your personal favourite shapes?
M: I love circles, triangles and exclamation marks (!). The exclamation make symbol on MIGO’s logo shows our customers that MIGO is a platform for designs by creating anything from patterns.
N: What do you hope to achieve with MIGO?
Producing underwear, clothes and backpacks is just our first step. I want to make many kinds of products and would like to provide a platform for Hong Kong designers to present their designs with MIGO.
N: Any favourite designers or style personalities?
M: We love Marimekko, Just Hype and Kenzo.
N: How do you get creative ideas?
M: We would indulge in ‘crazy talk’ in a restaurant and come up with our ideas. And then we would research on how to create them and make them better.
N: What do you do during your free time?
M: Reading, learning and enjoying my time with friends.
MIGO tees and bags are currently available on the newly launched Nookmag store.
