The Butter Factory and GOODSTUPH are joining creative forces to celebrate a neglected era of dance music – the 1990s, in a one-night-invite-only Tea Dance party on 24 November 2012.
In the same manner National Service democratically disregards social classes and bring Singaporean men of all personalities and backgrounds together, Singapore’s clubbing scene of the early 1990s brought together Singaporeans of different social classes together with its questionable choice of Eurotrash dance tunes in Tea Dances.
The concept of a Tea Dance was born to cater to under-18 teenagers in the afternoon on Saturdays, where they could flaunt their bedroom-honed, dramatic choreographed moves over non-alcoholic drinks.
Like the bad haircut and Cross Colour jeans, Tea Dances have been tucked under the bed by most 1990s teenagers, who are now in their early to mid-thirties. Too young to truly appreciate retro-themed nights and too old to understand the deal with K-Pop bands, the 1990s teenager has absolutely nowhere to go to reminisce his or her former life.
Key Singaporeans in their 30s who have proven instrumental to the country with their contributions will be extended an invite to this invite-only event.
Just for the record, alcoholic drinks will definitely be served. All attendees are strongly encouraged to dress to the occasion. The best-dressed lian and the best-dressed beng will win a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black each. Winners are selected by a panel of bengs and lians from the organisers.
Now That’s What I Call Tea Dance!
