There is nothing quite as pure and genuine as handmade craftwork. Heartfelt and meekly exclusive, every piece speaks something personal about the creator. So when an exhibition of all thing handmade comes around, you know it is going to make a big fat statement.
Sew Searching is an exhibition about rejecting mass production, starring handmade plush toys and lifestyle products by local crafter Sandy Ng of Cookie Cutter after three years of soul searching, exploring and trying. Curated by Yanda of Do Not Design, the exhibition features detailed handiwork as well as original and quirky designs which are the physical manifestations of a soul gradually freeing itself from the reins of convention while learning to imagine like a child.
Every item is form of self-expression and reflects the way Sandy kept her head afloat the tsunami of commercialisation sweeping across the society.
Sew searching brings to life the challenges faced by people who refuse to conform in the face of cloned mails, machine regurgitated products and a prescribed route of convention. Attempting to keep alive a creative community independent of huge corporations, it seeks to gather like-minded people to witness a journey of searching and the fruits of this search. It also hopes to reshape how people consume and interpret handmade.
Additionally, the exhibition features collaborations with seven local creatives who share the same cause – Larry Peh of &Larry, Eeshaun, Kenny Leck of BooksActually, Jeremy Sherma, Holycrap, MessyMsxi and Darren Lee of Uniform will be presenting their own unique spin to a blank plush toy.
