Famed South Korean music producer Junior Chef dropped his latest single ‘DOMO’ last week via hip-hop label AOMG Records. Singapore’s top rapper ShiGGa Shay heads up this collaboration along with Malaysia’s prince of hip-hop SonaOne and Japan’s hottest breakout star JP THE WAVY.
The song was recorded on the night of Christmas Day 2017 in Tokyo, Japan, where Junior Chef was working with JP THE WAVY in the Shibuya-located studio.
When SonaOne and ShiGGa Shay visited the Japanese rapper at the studio, they started vibing to some of Junior Chef’s beats and started freestyling. Instead of the usual rap diss, the 2 artists placed a new spin on the freestyle, complimenting each other in turn.
“You think I’m mean but I’m nice though/ You think you nice I’m polite though/ Push it to the edge and we might, yo/ Rob my own house. It’s a heist, yo” which forms the first half of the chorus started off as a freestyle between SonaOne and ShiGGa Shay.
JP THE WAVY decided to jump on the track, writing and recording his verse in an hour. With the other 2 rappers recording their parts in quick succession, the song was completed at 7am the next morning.
The multi-lingual (English, Malay, French and Japanese) ’DOMO’ is mixed and mastered by Jimmy Cash who has worked with famed American rappers Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. The music video for ‘DOMO’ was shot early December 2018 in the Harajuku district of Tokyo, Japan, being directed and edited by Director Fish.
Famed for creating fellow South Korean Keith Ape’s defining trap anthem ‘It G Ma’, Junior Chef has also crafted tracks for other prominent hip-hop artists such as Jay Park and DOK2. Having won multiple music awards in Malaysia, SonaOne has been the forefront of his home country’s hip-hop and music industry. JP THE WAVY is riding high in the current wave of emergent rappers in Japanese hip-hop, completing an U.S. mini tour early 2019.
