Sole Superior, Singapore’s premier sneaker and streetwear convention returns on 27 & 28 October 2018 with its biggest and most spectacular edition to date, leveling up in size, activities and brand participants in a new event imprint evolved as ‘Street Superior Festival’ (SSF).
Jointly organized by concept activators, One Eleven and sneaker-culture stalwarts, Sole Superior, Street Superior Festival 2018 will feature up to 16 showcase brands; 70 individual streetwear vendors; 15 food vendors; a music and art line-up of 21 DJs, parkour and graffiti artists; arcade basketball by Under Armour and an in-door skate ramp by Vans x Pirate Life. Located at the historic Pasir Panjang ‘A’ Power Station, Street Superior will occupy 70,000sq. ft. of raw industrial space, a gathering of subcultures across Sneakers, Streetwear, Music, Digital and Street Art in one platform.
SSF brings together what belongs together, a culture that is as broad and diverse as it gets. Its festival grounds pays homage to street tribe takeovers referencing a neo-modern, dystopic township injected with techscape motifs. Get lost in the urban labyrinth where the street meets future tech, injected with simulated holographic displays and animation photobooths by Expo AV-Insync, motion graphics by Digital Kitchen Studios, and projection mapping techscapes by visual artist, Brandon Tay.
Walk This Way
A gathering for sneakerheads and the broader street-minded community, SSF will feature street culture destination stalls, graffiti art, and alley ways waiting to be discovered. Start at the Walk of Fame – the pedestal gateway to sneaker bragging rights on Instagram; Eyeyah Pop-up – a kid-friendly Halloween multi-media installation and pop-up store by Steve Lawler and Tanya Wilson; SBTG x VeChain – a timeline showcase chronicling the homegrown sneaker artist’s custom and collaboration work over 13 years: from the first custom kicks that catapulted him to global stardom in 2005 to the future of brand SBTG harnessing blockchain tech powered by VeChain.
Walk the Main Street and discover exclusive limited edition launches, pop-up concepts and activity highlights from showcase brands such as Casio G-SHOCK, Timberland, Jason Markk, Pony, Under Armour, Obey, Flabslab, Happy Socks, Krafers’ Paradise, and Continki. Look out for L.E Convenience – a pop-up sneaker lifestyle mini-mart inspired by your local neighbourhood convenience store – reimagined by iconic shoe retailer Limited Edt selling hype sneakers and apparel in place of bread, eggs, and sundries. Turn the corner and explore pop-up parlours by LoveSick Tattoo Studio and temporary Jagua ink tattoo collaborators @Jynk_ink & @outandink, and streetwise barbers, The Golden Rule Barber Co.; take home a piece of free art at the street gallery by artist Jau Goh; trail the graffiti wall bombs by @song.rscls, @antz_rscls, @boonbaked, @kringe_, @kr0me_, @blazeworks, and @craftyillustrator.
The heart of Street Superior is its central Marketplace, housing up to 70 vendors made up of private collectors, sneaker resellers, Instagram-only small businesses and streetwear brands. Shop and bargain for sneakers, accessories, vintage apparel, pre-loved designer items, shoe accessories, toys, and Polaroid cameras as well as street culture related books and magazines from Basheer Graphic Books. Many of the homegrown streetwear brands will also offer one-off limited edition capsules exclusively for Street Superior Festival 2018. These are merchandise by private collectors and individual sellers who have things to offer that they themselves would look for. Here’s your chance to cop special collabs, sample heat pairs, hunt down grail and hype sneakers, or discover a new homegrown streetwear brand.
If the Marketplace is the heart of SSF, the Trading Pit is its beating pulse. All ticket holders and attendees are invited to bring up to two pairs of sneakers to sell, trade, or barter their shoes in the public trading space. Punters as young as 12 years old have been known to trade collectible editions for as much as $800 in the Trading Pit. Also look out for the Street Superior Raffle Draw where attendees stand to win $30,000 worth of prizes from JD Sports, Casio G-SHOCK, Jason Markk, Freshly Pressed Socks, and Limited Edt, amongst others. All attendees of SSF holding a festival ticket are eligible for the Raffle Draw, which will happen at various times throughout the festival.
Hall of Flame – Rare Sneaker Gallery
Tucked deep into the inner sanctum of SSF grounds, discover the Hall of Flame – a gallery showcase of 200 pairs of rare sneakers with heat and cult status, gathered from local and regional private collectors. Rarely seen, these are never-before-released samples, super-rare heat editions and player exclusives including Louis Vuitton x Kanye West Jaspers ($8,000) from @_c_o_n_; Nike Anaconda AF1 ($2,000) from @dexter_t; Nike HTM Flyknit Set from @flipflapfallflat; Adidas x Jeremy Scott JS Bear collection, and Nike
Kobe Bryant Prelude Set.
Blockchain Tech Hits the Streets | SBTG x VeChain
In the world of collectible sneakers where rare editions can change hands for thousands of dollars, counterfeit goods are a major concern on return-of-investment for serious collectors and sneaker resellers. A first for this sneaker convention, SSF will introduce the possibilities of using Blockchain technology to authenticate high-value sneakers with the tap of a smartphone.
Pairing homegrown custom sneaker artist, Mark Ong aka SBTG with VeChain, a global enterprise-level public blockchain platform, the collaboration introduces the use of secured data NFC chips designed by VeChain embedded into 15 editions of custom sneakers by SBTG.
These NFC chips utilise blockchain technology, an unhackable digital ledger that is linked to cryptography and Bitcoin security. The chip tells the story behind SBTG’s sneaker collectibles, as well as to prove Proof of Origin and Authenticity of the artist’s shoes by uploading data to the blockchain which is unhackable and immutable. This is important as it secures the value of SBTG shoes in a marketplace rife with counterfeit knock-offs. Collectors and future buyers of these chip-embedded editions can now verify authenticity instantly with their smart phones without authenticity papers or conventional lo-fi authentication techniques. Collectors can also add to the social journey of the shoes with videos and images of their own before the shoes change hands in the resell market, creating a custom DNA journey and story of the collectible.
Social Cause | Sneaker Donation Drive for Soles4Souls
The SSF Township also calls for a shoe donation drive organized by Jason Markk x Bystander x Native. Attendees are encouraged to donate unwanted shoes to the cause, which collects shoes for Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based non-profit social enterprise. Soles4souls create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes to help individuals start and sustain small businesses to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. To date, Soles4Souls have distributed reliefs to over 127 countries. Any
kind of covered shoes is welcome, regardless of size, brand or gender, as long as they are in good, wearable condition. Donors will receive a token of appreciation from Jason Markk and Native.
