Who says staying home has to be dull? The team behind Studio MU YU hopes to encourage fellow Singaporeans to stay home and #makegoodart during this circuit breaker by launching a series of #STAYHŌMU D.I.Y. craft kits.
Studio MU YU will be working closely with three local craft brands from April to June to bring these kits to life, starting with Craft Atelier as the first edition of #STAYHŌMU, which is jewellery themed and slated to launch this Sunday, 26 April — just in time for Mother’s Day!
Each kit is priced at SGD48 (inclusive of delivery), and will be equipped with the necessary tools and materials for craft enthusiasts to create two sets of wooden earrings and necklaces, as well as two embroidered pendants. A live workshop session for these crafts will be taking place via Studio MU YU’s Instagram page on Mother’s Day (10 May), where detailed steps and guidance will be provided. This way, families can spend quality time with their mothers while still practicing social responsibility in the comfort of their homes.
Studio MU YU’s D.I.Y. jewellery kit presents aspiring makers with different wood shapes to play around with, giving them the opportunity to express themselves through unique, personalised designs. At the same time, the brand hopes to continue championing creation through the language of wood. Instead of discarding unwanted items in an endless cycle of waste, it hopes to lead by example through its dedicated practice of upcycling wood. In a mission to transform trash into treasure, the team at Studio MU YU collects small pieces of wood that would otherwise be discarded and converts them into wearable art.
Craft Atelier, on the other hand, will be preparing a D.I.Y. cross-stitch design inspired by Peranakan tiles. Not only is embroidery a craft with roots ingrained in Peranakan culture, the brand’s studio located in the Joo Chiat area — home to rich Peranakan architecture and food. Traditionally a skill passed on through generations, Craft Atelier aspires to keep the art of embroidery alive through a reimagination of the beauty around them.
It is Studio MU YU’s most earnest wish to continue reaching out to the local community through crafts that have enriched the lives of not only its team but also fellow makers. In doing so, it hopes to encourage positivity and demonstrate the importance of the arts in improving the quality of our inner lives — especially in extraordinary times like these.
“With the cancellation of trade fairs, events and workshops, these past few months have been really challenging for makers,” says Lyn Ng, founder of Studio MU YU. “However, it is our hope that by converting our usual workshops to D.I.Y. kits, we are able to keep operating from home and continue sharing the language of wood straight to members of our lovely community. We are so grateful for their support during this time, and hope that Singaporeans will continue supporting local.”
