Founded by a banker-turned-food entrepreneur, Stanley Seow, Sugarhaus is a dessert parlor, where customers can enjoy homemade ice-cream and desserts. His love for all things sweet and savory made him leave the corporate world to venture into the food and beverage industry. He even underwent lessons to master the intricate art of ice-cream making. His inspiration for bold flavors comes from his love of travelling and wanting to transform popular plated dessert into ice-cream. Incorporating mainly European flavors with his own twist, he has created flavors of ice-cream that has won over many customers’ palates, such as Sea Salt Toffee and Dutch Chocolate.
Located within Serene Centre at Bukit Timah is the year-old brand’s flagship store, which calls itself a place “where happiness is homemade”. Sugarhaus features a selection of European-inspired homemade ice cream. Even the flavors that are locally-inspired, such as Gula Melaka, have European element in them. At any one time, there will be 18 flavors of ice cream available on rotation. Stanley is responsible for most of the flavors, constantly experimenting with endless possibilities of flavor combinations. “Ice cream making is very much like mathematics. You have to really understand the different components of the flavors that you are trying to go for,” he shares.
A single scoop goes for SGD3.50++, while those looking to indulge can opt for the premium flavors. Priced at SGD4.30++ per scoop, the premium flavors stand out for the fact that they are richer and creamier than most commercial ice creams. The Dutch Chocolate, made with a concoction of different types of chocolates, is one of the best-selling flavors that remain on the menu. Another signature flavor is the Sea Salt Toffee, Sugarhaus’ rendition of the more common salted caramel flavor. The toffee adds a richer and more buttery taste to the ice cream.
Apart from ice cream, there is also an assortment of homemade desserts on display at the counter. Sugarhaus’ famous Taro Galaxy Cake has been recreated into the Galaxy Tart (SGD8++), made with a beautiful white chocolate mirror glaze and filled with chocolate mousse, raspberry jelly and chocolate crumble.
Next up is the Lemon Popsicle Tart (SGD8++). As its name suggests, the mouth-watering tart comes in the shape of a popsicle filled with lemon sable, lemon parfait and coated with white chocolate.
Fat Belly – Home of Alternative Cuts
Sharing a space with Sugarhaus, Serene Centre will also be home to a new sister brand, Fat Belly, a 10-seater speakeasy-style steakhouse that offers alternative cuts of beef such as Flat Iron.
Diners can look forward to a menu of alternative cuts of steak at night. The 10-seater speakeasy-style steakhouse will sit customers along a bar counter where they can interact with the chef and watch as their cuts of meat are being grilled. Here, there is a strong focus on lesser-known cuts, as these tend to boast stronger and more robust flavors.
Various cuts of beef, such as the USDA Grain Fed Angus Short Rib Steak (SGD25++), will be available on rotation, along with one of the highlights – USDA 150day Grain Fed Angus Flat Iron Steak (SGD22++), a cut of beef from the cow’s shoulder. This lesser known cut is relatively tender and packs a punch of flavors. All steaks come with a side of house salad and chimichurri sauce. There will also be one dessert exclusively available on Fat Belly’s menu: the Foie Gras Chocolate Bar (SGD12++) is served with foie gras ice cream, chocolate, caramel and apple jelly.
On weekends and public holidays, families with little tots can look forward to a special bouncy castle available at the spacious outdoor patio from 11am to 5pm.
