Bold and vivacious spell the visual expression of Daniel Wong’s work. In the debut collection for his self-named label, Daniel delved into the concept of exploration in his designs that combines strong and delicate prints. He illustrates a modern and confident style of aesthetics in the apparels and accessories, influenced by a mix of cultures that he has experienced all his life.
Born in Canada and spent his childhood in Scotland, Daniel has lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan, London and Milan. After graduating from Central St. Martins in London, he worked for Alexander McQueen where he was involved in designing shoes for the runway and pre-collections.
Expanding his horizons, he travelled to Milan and embarked on his MA in Istituto Marangoni. During this time, he was discovered by Versace. After graduating, Daniel became the main print designer for the Versace House that includes women’s, men’s wear runway and Haute Couture collections.
We stole a quick chat with Daniel at Taipei in Style 2014…
Nookmag (N): How do you think we can possess a good style?
Daniel (D): I think just be yourself, huh? Style is a form of self-expression, so there is no right way or wrong way or no way. There’s just your way. That’s style. What I hope is that our accessories can go with people’s style, instead of changing their style.
N: Tell us about your creative process.
D: I do a lot of research. I try to be as detailed as I can with the prints. I try to change everything, like fabric materials, colours. I’m inspired by what I’ve seen or what has affected me recently.
N: Whose work in the industry do you admire most?
D: For sure, it’s Donatella Versace. I love her to death, best person ever. She’s a very strong, smart and determined lady and she knows what she wants. And actually, she’s also a very caring person. She knows everyone’s name in the company and she even greets them.
N: Exhibiting here at Taipei in Style, what do you hope to accomplish?
D: We just want to share our thoughts and have a chat with the people here. It’s pretty relaxed for us.
N: Would you wear the clothes that you design on a daily basis?
D: Yes, all of them. I’ve been asked to put them back (laughs).
N: What’s your favourite colour?
D: Gold. It’s very overstated and bold. It kinda fits with everything. It’s bold and versatile.
