The term night market, or pasar malam, as it is conveniently dubbed here in Singapore, is about to be reinvented. The Local People is an online retail platform where creatives – designers, authors, craftsmen, bands – can showcase their work. In collaboration with social media influencer management agency, GushCloud, the team is extending their support for the local craft by organising an artists’ + night market at Hoot Kiam Road on 30 May 2014.
Replacing the greasy, sweat-infused Ramlee burgers are the wholesome, handmade granola by The Edible Company and cold pressed juices by Joogo. Instead of pasar malam novelties like mua chee(s) and malt sugar candies, you get bakeries like Overdoughs and Kreme Couture The Patisserie.
Don’t overspend on cupcakes though, because there’s a long and diverse line-up of brands ready to impress you. Printmaker Lijie Ong, the barbers from The Panic Room, printing company Knuckles & Notch, and leather craftsmen Forest Child are just some of them – and the list is growing. Full and half vendor booths are still available at $60 and $35 respectively. Get ’em here.
Of course, things will not be complete without some good tunes, and The Local People have booked some great bands/singers for the night market. The Auditory Effect’s catchy beats, weish’s beautiful mixture of vocal percussion and singing, and Hilary Yang’s folk-pop songs will fill the alleyway of Hoot Kiam Road.
The sweet combination of food, music, and shopping is a temptation hard to resist. End your May on a right note, we say. 30 May, 7pm to 2am, at Hoot Kiam Road. More information on The Local People x GushCloud Night Market here.
