Dubbing its latest work Continuum, The Observatory indulges a deep seated fascination with Southeast Asian music as it continues to power musical exploration in challenging and unexpected ways. The album features gamelan-inspired bronze instruments custom built on a unique 6- tone scale.
With a pair of jegogan and pemade, one cengceng, and a reyong set with acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, synths, drums and vocals, the band brews up a musical storm interlocking Balinese-African rhythms, prog rock, early electronic music, and trance, marked by the use of repetitive figures and tuning variations to create cyclical vibrations known as ‘beats’. The music remains dark and hypnotic.
Continuum is the result of the band’s journey of fascination, discovery and engagement with gamelan that spanned over four to five years. After all, the heart and soul of The Observatory is in its constant reinvention.
To celebrate the release of Continuum, The Observatory will be holding a concert on 23 and 24 July 2015 at The Substation. It will be performed in full for the first time by an ensemble of 10 musicians.
