Transitional___ (read: Transitional Space) is a nomadic creative platform that seeks under utilised spaces – or those in transition to a new lease – to occupy, so that those brimming with great ideas can have an outlet to express them.
If you’re new to this concept, it basically means that the creative community now have a space to gather and create! This space changes every few months, with the platform travelling from site to site, allowing nooks and crannies of this 364km island to be a host of the creative movement at least once (hopefully). We’d like to think that this is the artsier and less politically charged version of the Occupy Movement.
The people behind this platform is creative agency Shophouse & Co. Director Stella Gwee sees Transitional___ as a chance for landlords and creatives to become partners in creating a vibrant community at chosen sites. Major hurdles like high rental and start up costs when starting their projects are less of a worry now!
Their first space is at 115 King George’s Avenue – succinctly shortened to 115KG. This edition takes up an industrial like space, featuring an 8m ceiling height with a mezzanine level. Boutique developer The Bamboo Group has recently purchased the 6-storeybuilding with plans to lease it toaward-winning landscape architecture studio Atelier Dreiseitl. Good things are also brewing around the area, with new cafes popping up next to studios and co-working spaces.
“We simply want everyone to come to Transitional___ at 115 KG to learn and make things with your hands, appreciate affordable and good design, enjoy good conversations over honest food and be inspired,” says Adib Jalal, creative director, Shophouse & Co.
115KG now houses Naiise (Naiise.com), an online design retailer carrying over 200+ brands of local and international designs. The latest pop up retail space features a good variety of products, from local designs, accessories, and upcycled products. Naiise and Tyrwhitt General Company will also be running free demos every weekend, which are targeted at helping people better understand the nuances of the designers’ craft. There will also be a 1-day local food tasting event to showcase Naiise’s newly launched local food section.
Drop by Transitional___ at 115KG, 115 King George’s Avenue to experience this concept for yourself. The space at 115KG will be occupied till 22nd June 2014, daily 12noon to 7pm.
