After six months and over 10,000 submissions coming across Asia, the second year of Vans Asia Custom Culture Competition has come to a conclusion. AND THE WINNER IS… JOHN NIKKO S. PELAEZ!
Hailing from Malabon City in the Philippines, Pelaez has had an affinity and talent for art ever since he was a child. Developing his craft over the years, Pelaez went on to graduate with a degree in fine arts, architecture and design and had received numerous awards during his education. Now, he can add another notch on his belt as the victor of this year’s contest with his powerful, striking and thoughtful depiction of the divine on a pair of True White Slip-On.
At first glance, Pelaez’s illustration looks like angry Zeus-like gods casting down fire and brimstone onto humanity. But, the real revelation behind his work is to show us that we are our own gods, masters of our own destiny, skaters who choose their our own path to ride. The blazing fire represents all of life’s obstacles to overcome and the black and white motif symbolizes the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang – the necessity for balance and harmony in life.
Pelaez takes home US$2,000 and will have his design produced and put on shelfs at Asia Vans Stores in 2019, so we too can take home a pair of his artwork and appreciate it on your own two feet. The market finalists will also have their designs produced as a mini-capsule collection for their friends and family.
Congrats to Pelaez once again for winning the 2018 Vans Asia Custom Culture Competition, it is a wrap of this year and do not forget to check out all the inspiring designs on Vans Custom Culture Asia!
