We’ve seen a handful of collaborations between Vans and well-known artists around the globe, but Vault by Van’s partnership with Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami might be the most fun and eclectic yet! Known for his vibrant paintings and immaculate sculptures and designs, Murakami turns his favourite Vans pair – the Classic Slip-On – into his muse.
We now see the classic pair come to live with bright colours, cool shapes, and crazy imageries inspired by traditional Japanese art and pop-culture. Most recognizable is Murakami’s recurring motifs, the smiling flower and skull patterns. Murakami’s own dog, Pom, makes a cameo on the footbed of each Slip-On as she sits atop the Vans skateboard logo. This is a true example of his Superflat form, a term he coined to summarise the blurred lines between high and low arts in his work.
For his collaborative footwear capsule, Murakami presents the Classic Slip-On, in six adult-unisex colorways. In addition to footwear, the Vault by Vans x Takashi Murakami collaboration brings forth an artistic assortment of apparel and skate decks, so expect to see these motifs there too.
